Weather and Safety: The Calm Before the Storm
Sunday brings mostly calm weather to Madeira, ideal for outdoor activities. However, this is the last such day before a significant change. Make the most of it, as conditions, especially in the mountains, are expected to worsen from Monday.
Yellow Wind Warning from Monday 12:00 PM
- Who it affects: All tourists, especially those planning mountain hikes or flights on Monday afternoon and Tuesday.
- What this means: Meteorologists have issued a yellow warning for strong northerly winds. Gusts of up to 80 km/h are expected from Monday noon, reaching up to 95 km/h in mountainous areas. This may affect airport operations and make travel in higher altitudes impossible.
- Our recommendation: If you’re planning a mountain trip, go today. For Monday afternoon, plan activities in the safety of lower altitudes—such as visiting museums, the Funchal market, or a wine tasting. If you are flying out on Monday, monitor your flight status.
Status of Hiking Trails (PR) and Levadas
Safety on the trails is crucial. Some popular paths are restricted due to landslides and maintenance. Always respect official signage and do not enter closed sections.
Overview of Major Restrictions:
- PR1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro ↔ Pico Ruivo): PARTIALLY OPEN
The trail is only accessible from Pico do Areeiro to the Ninho da Manta viewpoint. The path beyond, towards the tunnels and Pico Ruivo, is closed. A trip for sunrise and a short walk to the first viewpoint is still possible and worthwhile, but do not plan for the full day-hike. - PR10 Levada do Furado (Ribeiro Frio → Portela): CLOSED
This levada is completely closed due to a landslide and a collapsed walkway. Entering the trail is dangerous. As an alternative in the Ribeiro Frio area, we recommend the short and easy walk to the Balcões viewpoint (PR11). - PR3 Vereda do Pico do Castelo (Porto Santo): CLOSED
This trail on the neighboring island of Porto Santo is closed due to construction work.
Tips for Today in Funchal and the Surrounding Area
Visit Civil Protection Week at Praça do Povo
Who it’s for: Families with children, and anyone interested in technology and safety.
What this means: Civil Protection Week begins today right on the Funchal seafront (Praça do Povo). You can get a close-up look at firefighting and rescue equipment. It’s an interesting and safe stop during a city walk.
Traffic Situation and Other Tips
- Traffic accident in Machico: There has been an accident at the Água de Pena roundabout (near the airport). If you are heading this way to the airport or Ponta de São Lourenço, drive carefully and expect possible delays.
- Cruise ships in port: Large cruise ships are docked in the harbor, which means the center of Funchal (especially around the Mercado dos Lavradores and the Monte cable car) may be more crowded during the day.
