Heat and Fire: What to Watch Out for in the Mountains and by the Sea

Peak summer in Madeira brings beautiful sunny weather, but also risks that shouldn’t be underestimated. Authorities have issued important warnings regarding high temperatures and the danger of wildfires.

High-Temperature Warning

  • Who is affected? All tourists, especially those planning mountain hikes (e.g., the trek to Pico Ruivo) or spending extended time at the beach.
  • What does this mean in practice? The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has extended the warning until Wednesday, July 8th. An orange alert is in effect for mountain areas, with temperatures reaching 30°C. The coast and the island of Porto Santo are under a yellow alert. Expect an extreme UV index as well.
  • What do we recommend? Schedule strenuous activities for the early morning or late afternoon. Drink at least 1.5 liters of water daily, wear a hat, and use a high-factor sunscreen (SPF 30+).

Extreme Wildfire Risk

  • Who is affected? Anyone spending time in nature – in forests, along levadas, or on hiking trails.
  • What does this mean in practice? Due to the heat and dry conditions, the highest level of fire danger is in effect for the central parts of the island. It is strictly forbidden to light fires, barbecue (except in designated concrete areas), or discard cigarette butts.
  • What do we recommend? Be extremely vigilant. If you see smoke or fire in nature, move to a safe location immediately and call the emergency number 112.

Hiking Trails: Key Change for PR1 Vereda do Areeiro

The most popular and sought-after mountain trail on the island, connecting the two highest peaks, has crucial new rules for the 2026 summer season.

PR1: One-Way, with a Fee and Mandatory Booking

  • Who is affected? Anyone planning to hike between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo.
  • What does this mean in practice? The trail is open all week, but it is strictly one-way from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo. Returning the same way is not permitted. To complete the full hike, you must have an online reservation from the SIMplifica portal and pay a fee of €10.50. An exception is the short, two-way section from Pico do Areeiro to the Pedra Rija viewpoint (“Stairway to Heaven”), which costs €4.50.
  • What do we recommend? Book your entry well in advance. Planning your logistics is key: if you leave your car at the Pico do Areeiro car park, you will need to arrange transportation back from the end point (Achada do Teixeira car park, the descent from Pico Ruivo), such as a taxi or a specialized transfer service.

Activity Tips and Practical Information

Besides hiking, Madeira offers plenty of other experiences. Here are a few current tips and one important piece of practical information for emergencies.

Escape the Heat Beneath the Waves

If you want to cool down, the ocean is a great alternative to the overheated mountains. Scuba diving tourism in Madeira is booming thanks to its exceptionally clear water and rich marine life. Local centers offer courses and introductory dives for complete beginners. Due to high demand, we recommend booking in advance.

Funchal by Night: Expo, Culture, and Parties

Looking for evening plans? Until July 12th, you can visit the ExpoMadeira trade fair at the Marítimo stadium in Funchal. For a symbolic entry fee of €1, you can experience an authentic atmosphere, taste local specialties, and listen to music. History buffs will appreciate the new, updated guides to the main monuments (Sé Cathedral, Santa Clara Monastery), while electronic music fans can head to a party with DJ Paul Sergy Far on the casino’s rooftop terrace.

Important: Restrictions on Emergency Room Visits

In case of a medical issue, it’s important to know that the main hospital, Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital in Funchal, has temporarily suspended all visits to its emergency department due to extreme overcrowding. If you need to seek urgent care, your companions will unfortunately not be allowed into the department. Remember to bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and travel insurance documents with you.
