Heat Warning: Orange Alert in the Mountains

If you’re heading to the mountains, be especially cautious. The meteorological institute IPMA has extended its high-temperature warning until Wednesday, July 8th. An orange (high) alert level is in effect for the central mountainous regions, with temperatures climbing towards 30°C. A milder, yellow alert is in place for the coast. The island is also experiencing an extreme UV index and a maximum risk of wildfires.

What This Means in Practice and What We Recommend:

  • For hikers in the mountains: Set out for hikes, especially to Pico do Areeiro or Pico Ruivo, as early in the morning as possible. Avoid physical exertion during the midday heat.
  • Essential Gear: Pack high-SPF sunscreen, a hat, and above all, plenty of water (more than usual).
  • Look for Alternatives: Consider trips along shaded levadas at lower altitudes or a day by the sea, where the water temperature is a pleasant 23–24°C.

Important Nature and Transport Restrictions

In response to the high fire risk, strict measures are in place. The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) is enforcing a ban on lighting any kind of fire, even in designated picnic areas with stone barbecues. Similarly, wild camping and the use of tools that can create sparks are prohibited.

Mountain Road Closure

Who this affects: Drivers planning to travel between the peaks.
What it means: The connecting road between the Pico do Areeiro and Eira do Serrado (Curral das Freiras) viewpoints is closed as a precautionary measure.
Recommendation: To travel between these locations, you must use longer detour routes that go through the valleys.

Current Status of the Most Popular Trails

The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has updated the status of the main hiking trails. Please remember that since the beginning of the year, all marked PR trails require online registration and a fee of €3.

PR1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro – Pico Ruivo)

The trail is fully open, but only the western path through the tunnels is accessible. The eastern, more challenging route via Pico das Torres remains closed long-term for safety reasons.

PR1.3 Vereda da Encumeada

Good news for hikers heading west from the island’s highest peak. A 3.9 km section between Pico Ruivo and the Boca das Torrinhas pass has been newly reconstructed and is now open. The remaining part of the trail towards Encumeada is still closed.
