Mountain Alert: Orange Weather Warning and Trail Status

The weather is the defining story in Madeira today. A mix of great news for hikers and a serious warning from meteorologists calls for careful planning, especially for trips into the island’s interior.

Orange Warning for Extreme Temperatures

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued an orange alert (the second-highest level) for the mountainous regions of Madeira due to high temperatures, which could reach up to 30°C. The warning is in effect until Saturday, July 4th, at 5:00 PM.

  • Who is affected: All hikers planning treks in the interior (Pico do Areeiro, Pico Ruivo, Rabaçal, etc.).
  • What this means: The mountains are experiencing extremely low humidity and strong winds, which significantly increases the risk of dehydration, heatstroke, and exhaustion. There is also a maximum risk of forest fires.
  • Our recommendation: If you decide to hike, start very early in the morning. Bring at least double the amount of water you normally would, along with a hat and sunscreen. Minimize physical activity during the hottest part of the day (between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM). A strict ban on lighting fires and using public barbecues is in effect.

Key Trail Status: PR 1 Open Daily!

The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has great news: the iconic ridge trail PR 1 – Vereda do Areeiro, connecting Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo, is once again open every day of the week following maintenance work. The PR 9 – Levada do Caldeirão Verde trail is also fully accessible.

  • Important Notice: The connecting section from Caldeirão Verde to Caldeirão do Inferno remains permanently closed.
  • Permanently Closed Trails: For safety reasons, access is strictly forbidden on the following trails: PR 7 (Levada do Moinho), PR 10 (Levada do Furado), and PR 20 (Vereda do Jardim do Mar).
  • Fees and Registration: Remember that online registration and payment of a fee (€4.50 to €10.50 for PR 1) are required for most official trails (including PR 1 and PR 9) via the SIMplifica portal.

Traffic Disruptions: Rali da Calheta and Events in Funchal

If you’re planning to travel around the island by car, expect local disruptions in the west and in the capital city.

Road Closures in the West (Rali da Calheta)

This evening and all day Saturday, the Rali da Calheta car rally will take place in the Calheta municipality. The event will require extensive and complete road closures.

  • Who is affected: Drivers and tourists heading to the west of the island.
  • What this means: Roads in the areas of Calheta, Prazeres, Santa, Ponta do Pargo, and Fonte do Bispo will be impassable on Friday evening and for most of Saturday.
  • Our recommendation: If you’re planning a trip to the lighthouse in Ponta do Pargo or the forests around Prazeres, postpone it until Sunday or choose a different part of the island entirely.

Funchal in Motion: Festival and Fair

Two major events are happening in Funchal. The Summer Opening music festival continues in Santa Catarina Park, and the Expomadeira trade fair opens today at 6:00 PM at the Marítimo stadium (in the Barreiros district).

  • Who is affected: Visitors to Funchal.
  • What this means: Expect large crowds and noise around Santa Catarina Park (near the port and waterfront). In the residential Barreiros district, anticipate traffic jams and virtually no chance of finding parking.
  • Our recommendation: Travel to the Expomadeira fair on foot, by taxi, or by public transport. Avoid driving to the area.
