Today’s Weather Demands Flexibility

Today’s plans in Madeira are significantly affected by strong winds impacting air travel, coastal conditions, and mountain trails. We’ve compiled key information to help you enjoy your day safely and to the fullest. The main advice: today is the perfect time to explore Funchal and the calmer southern coast.

Transportation: Delays at the Airport and on the Highway

Cristiano Ronaldo Airport Battling High Winds

  • Who is affected: All passengers arriving in or departing from Madeira today.
  • What this means in practice: Strong wind gusts are causing significant delays and flight diversions. Several flights have already been redirected to neighboring islands. Expect longer waits and potential queues at car rental desks and taxi stands.
  • What we recommend: Before heading to the airport, check the current status of your flight via your airline’s app or the airport’s website (ANA). Be patient, as the situation can change quickly.

Evening Restrictions on the VR1 Highway

  • Who is affected: Drivers heading west from Funchal in the evening (towards Câmara de Lobos, Ribeira Brava, Ponta do Sol).
  • What this means in practice: From 8:00 PM tonight, traffic on the Funchal–Câmara de Lobos section will be reduced to a single lane for maintenance. Expect delays and possible traffic jams.
  • What we recommend: If you are returning from a trip after sunset, consider using the old coastal road, ER101. While slower, it will help you avoid the highway congestion and offers beautiful views.

Ocean and Coastline: Avoid the North, the South is Calm

  • Who is affected: Anyone planning to swim, surf, or walk along the coast.
  • What this means in practice: A yellow weather warning is in effect for the entire north coast due to high waves (4 to 5 meters). It is dangerous to be near the ocean here. The natural pools in Porto Moniz and Seixal will most likely be closed (indicated by a red flag).
  • What we recommend: Change your plans and head to the sheltered south coast. The sandy beaches of Calheta or Machico, or the pebble beaches in Ponta do Sol, are safe and sunny options today.

Hiking Trails and Mountains: Restrictions on PR1

  • Who is affected: Mountain hikers, especially those planning the trek between the highest peaks.
  • What this means in practice: The famous PR1 Vereda do Areeiro trail (Pico do Areeiro – Pico Ruivo) is partially closed. The steeper eastern path is impassable due to a small rockfall.
  • What we recommend: The trek can still be completed, but you must use the western route that goes through the tunnels. However, be aware that it will be much more crowded today. It is essential to pack a windproof jacket for the mountains. The good news is that popular levada walks like PR9 Caldeirão Verde and PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes are fully open.

Our Tip: The Flower Festival in Funchal

  • Who is affected: Anyone looking for a great and safe activity for the day.
  • What this means in practice: The renowned Festa da Flor (Flower Festival) is in full swing in the center of Funchal. The main attraction is the breathtaking exhibition of exotic flowers at Largo da Restauração. It’s the perfect plan to avoid the adverse weather elsewhere on the island.
  • What we recommend: Expect the largest crowds around noon. For a calmer experience and better photos, visit the exhibition early in the morning or later in the afternoon after 5:00 PM. Parking in the city center may be difficult.
