High Winds Disrupting Airport Operations

Who is affected?

All passengers arriving in or departing from Madeira today, April 10, 2026.

What does this mean in practice?

Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport has been experiencing strong wind gusts since the early morning, leading to the cancellation or diversion of dozens of flights. The airport terminal is crowded with waiting passengers, and the situation is very dynamic.

Our Recommendation

  • Check your flight status immediately directly with your airline (via their mobile app or website).
  • Do not travel to the airport until you have confirmation that your flight is scheduled to depart. This will save you a long and unnecessary wait.

Mountains Covered in Snow, Drive with Caution

Who is affected?

Drivers and all tourists who were planning a trip by car to the mountains or the island’s interior.

What does this mean in practice?

Snow has fallen in the highest areas of Madeira today, including Pico do Areeiro and the Paul da Serra plateau. There is a risk of ice on the roads and very poor visibility. Additionally, strong winds may cause branches to fall onto the roads. The Civil Protection authority has issued a warning and advises against travelling to these areas.

Our Recommendation

  • Postpone any trips to mountain peaks and ridges today. The conditions are dangerous.
  • If you must travel by car, drive with extreme caution, especially in wooded areas.
  • The more sheltered areas on the south of the island are an ideal choice for today.

Hiking Trail Status: Some Levadas Are Closed

Who is affected?

Hikers and levada enthusiasts.

What does this mean in practice?

The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has closed several popular trails for safety and maintenance reasons. Before you set out, check the current status on their official portal.

Currently closed or impassable trails:

  • PR 10 Levada do Furado (Ribeiro Frio – Portela): Closed due to a landslide.
  • PR 18 Levada do Rei: Completely closed.
  • PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro: This trail is undergoing maintenance and is extremely high-risk today due to snow and wind. We strongly advise against attempting it.

Our Recommendation

Always check the trail status on the official IFCN website. Also, remember that non-residents over the age of 12 must pay a €3 fee online via the Simplifica portal before accessing the recommended routes (PRs).

Today’s Tip: Soak Up the Festival Atmosphere in Funchal

Who is it for?

Anyone looking for a safe and interesting activity.

What’s happening?

While the mountains are battling bad weather, Funchal is alive with preparations for the famous Flower Festival (Festa da Flor). The first decorations are being installed in the streets, and areas for the traditional flower carpets are being prepared. The city center is an excellent shelter from the wind and offers a unique spectacle.

Our Recommendation

Take a walk through the center of Funchal, especially around Avenida do Mar. You may encounter minor traffic restrictions, but your reward will be a glimpse of the blossoming beauty of one of Madeira’s greatest festivals. It’s the perfect plan for today.
