Weather and Safety: Mountain Areas Are Off-Limits Today

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued an orange alert for heavy rain and a yellow alert for strong winds for Madeira. In mountainous regions, gusts can reach speeds of up to 100 km/h.

  • Who is affected? All hikers planning treks, especially in higher altitude areas like Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo.
  • What does this mean in practice? There is an extreme risk of falls, landslides, and falling trees. Ridge trails are life-threatening in these conditions. Coastal cliffs are also dangerous due to strong waves.
  • Our recommendation: Cancel all plans for mountain hikes. Opt for activities at lower altitudes or visit indoor attractions. Your safety is the top priority.

Transportation: Disruptions at Cristiano Ronaldo Airport

Strong winds are severely restricting operations at the international airport in Funchal. As of this morning, 12 flights (arrivals and departures) have been cancelled, and another 4 aircraft have been diverted to other airports.

  • Who is affected? Travellers arriving to or departing from Madeira today.
  • What does this mean in practice? Expect delays, rescheduling, or outright cancellation of your flight. The number of affected flights may increase throughout the day.
  • Our recommendation: Do not travel to the airport without first checking the status of your flight with your airline or on the airport’s website (ANA Aeroportos). Have a backup plan in case you need to stay on the island an extra night.

Trail and Levada Status: Closures and Important Updates for 2026

In addition to the general warning against entering the mountains, there are several specific restrictions and changes you should be aware of.

Current Closures and Restrictions

  • PR 1 (Vereda do Areeiro): The route from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo is only accessible up to the Pedra Rija viewpoint (approx. 1.2 km). The eastern section (towards Pico das Torres) is completely closed for safety reasons.
  • PR 9 (Caldeirão Verde) and PR 10 (Levada do Furado): Both trails are closed long-term due to extensive landslides. Entry is strictly prohibited.

Good News and Updates

  • PR 16 (Fajã do Rodrigues): This levada has been fully reopened after repairs.
  • PR 6 (Levada das 25 Fontes): The newly implemented one-way “bypass” system is working excellently. There are now separate paths to and from the waterfalls, which has eliminated the previous congestion on narrow trails.
  • NEW FOR 2026: Trail Entrance Fees. A mandatory entrance fee has been introduced for international tourists on official hiking routes. You must book and pay in advance online via the government’s Simplifica portal. You risk a fine without a valid electronic confirmation.
