Weather and Safety: Wind and Waves Dominate the Island
Madeira is currently under the influence of a low-pressure system, bringing adverse weather conditions. The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere has issued orange and yellow warnings, primarily for strong winds and high waves.
- Who is affected: All tourists on the island, especially those planning to be near the sea or in the mountains.
- What this means in practice: Expect wind gusts of up to 95 km/h (approx. 59 mph), particularly on the north coast and at higher elevations. On the north coast and near Porto Santo, waves are reaching heights of 5 to 6 meters (16-20 feet).
- Our recommendation: We strongly advise against walking on coastal promenades and piers on the north coast, such as in Porto Moniz or Seixal. Your safety is the top priority.
Interesting note: A minor earthquake was recorded near Porto Santo during the night, but it was not felt on the mainland and poses no risk.
Air Travel Disrupted, Roads Slowed
Strong winds are severely disrupting operations at Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport (FNC). Dozens of flights have been cancelled or diverted throughout the day.
- Who is affected: Passengers arriving in or departing from Madeira today.
- What this means in practice: There is a high probability your flight will be cancelled, delayed, or diverted. Additionally, rain is slowing traffic on the main Via Rápida highway, increasing travel time to the airport.
- Our recommendation: If you are scheduled to fly today, check your flight status immediately with your airline or on the airport’s website. Do not travel to the airport until you have confirmation that your flight will operate.
Ironically, while the airport is facing issues, the port of Funchal welcomed two large cruise ships today. As a result, the city center will be bustling despite the adverse weather.
STOP to Mountain Hiking: Most Trails are Closed Today
For safety reasons, the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has closed most of the officially recommended hiking routes.
- Who is affected: All fans of hiking, levada walks, and mountain treks.
- What this means in practice: Routes such as Pico do Areeiro – Pico Ruivo, the levadas in the Rabaçal area (including 25 Fontes), and others are dangerous and inaccessible due to the risk of falling trees and landslides. Extreme winds are present at the highest altitudes, and there is even a possibility of snow.
- Our recommendation: Today is not the day for trips into the mountains and forests. Do not take risks and postpone your hike. Please respect the official closures.
Where to Go Instead of the Mountains? Tips for a Safe Day
Even in rainy and windy weather, Madeira offers plenty of options. Focus your activities on the lower elevations of the more sheltered south coast.
- Stay in Funchal: The city offers both shelter and entertainment. Visit the Mercado dos Lavradores, the CR7 Museum, the Madeira Story Centre, or one of the famous wine lodges (like Blandy’s Wine Lodge) to taste the excellent Madeira wine.
- Culture and Gastronomy: In the village of Faial on the north coast, the Annona (Cherimoya) Festival is culminating today, offering a glimpse into local traditions. However, the journey there may be slow.
- Dress appropriately: Even in the city, don’t forget a waterproof jacket and sturdy shoes. The wind can be piercing.
