Weather and Safety: Caution in the Mountains, Calm at Sea

Today brings significant weather changes that will affect many travelers’ plans. After yesterday’s strong winds, the situation at the airport and at sea is calming down, but a heatwave has now hit the island.

Heatwave and Orange Alert for the Mountains

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued a high-temperature warning, valid until Saturday. While the coast is under a yellow alert, an orange alert (high risk) is in effect for the mountain regions starting Friday.

  • Who is affected? All tourists, but especially those planning mountain hikes (Pico do Areeiro, Pico Ruivo, Paúl da Serra).
  • What does this mean in practice? Temperatures in the mountains will be extremely high, and the dry air increases the risk of dehydration, sunstroke, and heatstroke. The risk of forest fires is also dramatically increased.
  • What do we recommend? If you plan to hike, start as early in the morning as possible. Bring at least 3 liters of water per person, a hat, and high-quality sunscreen. Consider postponing strenuous hikes during peak heat.

Airport and Boat Trips Back to Normal

Great news for everyone who was waiting at the airport yesterday. The warnings for strong winds and high waves have been lifted.

  • Who is affected? Air travelers, and anyone interested in boat trips or the ferry to Porto Santo.
  • What does this mean in practice? Flight operations at Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport have fully stabilized. Boat companies are once again heading out for whale and dolphin watching tours, and the Lobo Marinho ferry is running without restrictions.
  • What do we recommend? Enjoy the calm sea! Conditions for water activities are ideal today.

Great News for Hikers: The Legendary PR1 Trail is Fully Open!

The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has confirmed fantastic news that all mountain lovers have been waiting for. The iconic trail between the island’s highest peaks is once again more accessible after extensive repairs.

  • Who is affected? All enthusiastic hikers and trekkers.
  • What does this mean in practice? The PR1 Vereda do Areeiro trail (Pico do Areeiro – Pico Ruivo) is now open every day of the week, not just on weekends. The western route through the tunnels is passable. The PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada trail is also partially open on the section from Pico Ruivo to Boca das Torrinhas.
  • What do we recommend? Plan this unforgettable hike! But don’t forget the heat warning mentioned above. To access the trail, you must also register and pay a fee in advance via the SIMplifica portal.

What’s Happening in Funchal: The Summer Opening Festival Kicks Off

If you’re in the capital city this evening, get ready for a lot of activity. The 12th edition of the island’s biggest summer music festival kicks off today in Santa Catarina Park.

  • Who is affected? Music and nightlife fans, as well as drivers and residents of Funchal.
  • What does this mean in practice? A crowd of up to 20,000 people is expected. The area around the park will be very busy in the evening, and parking will be nearly impossible. The festival runs until Saturday. At midnight, the World Cup match between Portugal and Croatia will be shown on a big screen here.
  • What do we recommend? If you want to experience the local atmosphere, head to the park (gates open at 4:30 PM). Leave your car at the hotel and walk or take a taxi. Smokers can get a free pocket ashtray on-site as part of an environmental campaign – help keep the park clean!
