Weather, Transport, and Safety

Spring weather in Madeira is showing its dynamic side. We’ve prepared an overview of the most important information to help you plan your day without unnecessary complications.

Winds Complicating Operations at Funchal Airport (FNC)

  • Who it affects: All passengers arriving in or departing from Madeira today.
  • What this means in practice: Strong winds are causing delays and, in some cases, flight diversions to the neighboring island of Porto Santo. Although the situation may change throughout the day, be prepared for possible changes to your flight schedule.
  • Our recommendation: Before heading to the airport, check the current status of your flight directly with your airline or on the airport’s website.

High Waves on the North Coast

  • Who it affects: Visitors to the northern part of the island, especially the Porto Moniz and Seixal areas.
  • What this means in practice: A yellow warning is in effect for waves reaching heights of 4 to 5 meters. Operators may temporarily close the natural volcanic pools for safety reasons. Walking on unprotected piers is dangerous today.
  • Our recommendation: It’s best to skip swimming in Porto Moniz today. Plan your walks at a safe distance from cliff edges. The sheltered beaches on the south side of the island are a better choice today.

Road Maintenance on the Route to Pico do Areeiro (ER 202)

  • Who it affects: Drivers heading to the central mountains, for example, to the Pico do Areeiro viewpoint.
  • What this means in practice: Maintenance work is underway on road ER 202, and traffic may be reduced to a single lane. Expect minor delays.
  • Our recommendation: Allow for a little extra travel time and drive with increased caution, following the current road signs.

Attractions and City Life

Despite minor restrictions, Madeira offers plenty of experiences. Plus, Funchal is beginning to dress up in its spring colors.

Limited Operation of the Monte Cable Car

  • Who it affects: Tourists planning a trip from Funchal to Monte to see the tropical gardens or ride the traditional toboggans.
  • What this means in practice: The popular cable car (Teleférico do Funchal) is undergoing scheduled spring maintenance. Its operation is limited today and may be temporarily suspended entirely.
  • Our recommendation: Use alternative transport to get to Monte. Local bus routes no. 20 and 21 (Horários do Funchal) are excellent options, as are taxis or the Bolt app.

Funchal Welcomes Spring with Floral Decorations

  • Who it affects: All visitors to the capital city.
  • What this means in practice: The installation of beautiful floral decorations has begun on the main avenue, Avenida Arriaga, and in surrounding parks, heralding the famous Flower Festival.
  • Our recommendation: Take this great opportunity to enjoy the awakening spring atmosphere and colorful decorations in the city center without the crowds that will arrive for the main festivities.

Tips for Hikers and Nature Lovers

Current Trail Conditions

  • Who it affects: Anyone planning to hike along the levadas or in the mountains today.
  • What this means in practice: Most of the lower-lying levada walks, including the popular PR6 (Levada das 25 Fontes), are easily passable. However, extra caution is required on the high-altitude PR1 trail (Pico do Areeiro – Pico Ruivo). Following recent rains, the surface is very slippery, and there is a risk of small rockfalls in some sections.
  • Our recommendation: Only attempt the PR1 trail today if you have high-quality, waterproof hiking boots and exercise extreme caution. If you are unsure, it’s better to choose one of the beautiful and safer levada walks at lower altitudes.
