Weather and Today’s Trip Tip: Head South
Today is perfect for activities on Madeira’s southern coast. According to meteorologists from IPMA, you can expect partly cloudy skies in Funchal and the surrounding areas with pleasant temperatures up to 25°C. In contrast, the north and mountainous regions will remain cloudy and cooler. If you’re heading to the peaks, be prepared for stronger winds, with gusts potentially reaching up to 40 km/h, especially in the morning. Don’t forget to pack a windproof jacket.
- Who does this affect? All tourists planning their day.
- What this means for you: It’s an ideal day to explore Funchal, walk along the coastal promenades, or go for a swim in the south. Hikes in the mountains are possible, but with appropriate clothing and caution.
- Our recommendation: Take advantage of the sunshine in the south. Save your trip to Pico do Areeiro for a day with a better forecast.
Trail Status: Warning for PR1 Vereda do Areeiro
The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has updated the status of the most popular trails. The most important news concerns the legendary route between the island’s highest peaks.
- PR1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro → Pico Ruivo) is partially closed. The trail is only safely passable in the initial section from Pico do Areeiro to the Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint (approx. 1.2 km). The eastern part of the loop around Pico das Torres is closed long-term for safety reasons. A complete crossing to Pico Ruivo via this route is therefore not possible.
- How can you get to Pico Ruivo? Madeira’s highest peak is safely accessible via the PR1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo trail from the Achada do Teixeira car park. This route is fully open and in good condition.
- Don’t forget to book! Access to these regulated trails (PR1, PR1.1, PR1.2) requires online registration and payment of a fee via the Simplifica portal.
What’s Happening in and around Funchal
The capital city is bustling today, and it’s good to be aware of a few events that might affect your plans.
- Busier City Centre: The cruise ship “Vista” is docked in the port today with over 650 passengers. Expect larger crowds between 9:00 and 18:00 in the historic centre (Zona Velha), near the Monte cable car, and at the Mercado dos Lavradores market. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting these spots on another day.
- Upcoming Road Closure: Starting this Wednesday (June 17th), a long-term closure of Rua Dr. João Serra Velez Caroço will begin in the northern part of Funchal. If you are driving in the city, check for diversion routes in advance.
- All Calm at Hotels: This morning’s report of a fire at the Madeira Regency Cliff hotel might sound dramatic, but the situation was quickly resolved by staff before firefighters arrived. There were no injuries, and operations in the Lido hotel zone are completely unaffected.
Practical Tips for Travelling Around the Island

If you have a rental car, new fuel prices are in effect as of today. Petrol (Super 95) has slightly decreased to €1.791/l. In contrast, Diesel (Gasóleo) has increased by two cents to €1.759/l. So, if you have a petrol car, it was worth waiting until today to refuel.
