Strong Winds Paralyze Santa Cruz Airport
For the second day in a row, Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport is facing strong wind gusts, leading to the cancellation of at least 14 flights. The disruptions affect connections from mainland Portugal, the Azores, and other international routes.
- Who is affected? All passengers arriving in or departing from Madeira today.
- What does this mean in practice? Delays, diversions, or outright cancellations of your flight are highly likely. The wind has also impacted cultural events in Funchal – the evening concert program at the Castanheiro Boutique Hotel had to be changed due to a cancelled flight.
- What we recommend: Before heading to the airport, check your flight status online and stay in contact with your airline. If you are scheduled to depart today, be prepared for the possibility of an involuntary extension to your stay and have a backup accommodation plan.
Caution in the Mountains: Gusty Winds and High UV Radiation
Today’s weather on the island is characterized by wind and sun. While there might be light rain on the north coast, the main concerns are strong wind gusts and an extreme UV index.
- Who is affected? Hikers heading to mountain trails, viewpoints, and levadas.
- What does this mean in practice? In higher altitudes and on the eastern or western coasts, wind gusts can reach speeds of up to 60 km/h. Walking on exposed paths and ridges is dangerous. At the same time, a very high UV radiation risk has been declared for the entire island – you are not safe from sunburn even under cloud cover.
- What we recommend: Pack a quality windbreaker for your hike. Be extremely cautious at viewpoints. Regardless of the weather, use sunscreen with SPF 50+, wear a hat, and sunglasses.
Trail Status: PR1 Closed Today, an Alternative is Available
The most popular mountain trail on the island, PR1 Vereda do Areeiro, is completely CLOSED to the public today (Tuesday, June 9th). Until June 26th, it is only open on weekends (Friday to Sunday).
- Who is affected? Anyone who planned to hike between the highest peaks, Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo.
- What does this mean in practice? The traverse is not possible today. From Pico do Areeiro, you can only go as far as the Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint (approx. 1.2 km) and back.
- What we recommend: If you want to summit Pico Ruivo, take the only open route: the PR1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo trail from the Achada do Teixeira car park. Remember that a paid online reservation via the SIMplifica portal is required for entry to all marked PR trails.
- Long-term closures: When planning other trips, keep in mind that PR 7, PR 9, PR 10, PR 20, and others also remain closed. Always check the current status on the official IFCN website.
Tomorrow’s Tip: Experience Authentic Madeira at the Sheep Shearing Festival
If you’re looking for a unique experience for tomorrow’s public holiday (June 10th), head to the mountains in the Poiso area. In the locality of Ribeira dos Boieiros, a traditional sheep shearing (‘tosquia’) is taking place, combined with a rural festival (‘arraial’).
- Who is this for? Travellers who want to experience local culture, traditions, and gastronomy.
- What does this mean in practice? You can expect a non-commercial event with live music, dancing, and stalls selling local food and drink. You’ll witness a craft that has been practiced here for generations.
- What we recommend: This is an ideal tip for a trip into the island’s interior. Combine a visit to the festival with a drive along the mountain roads and enjoy the day like a local.
