Trail and Levada Status: Great News from Caldeirão Verde
The most important news for all hiking enthusiasts: after extensive maintenance, one of the most popular routes, PR9 – Levada do Caldeirão Verde, is fully operational again. If you had this iconic hike planned, you’re good to go. However, some restrictions may still apply, and it is crucial to respect all official signage.
Which Trails to Hike (and Avoid)?
- Fully Open: PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde.
- Partially Closed: The King’s Trail, PR1 Vereda do Areeiro, is still only accessible on the section from Pico do Arieiro to the Ninho da Manta viewpoint and onward to Pedra Rija (approx. 1.2 km). The path to Pico Ruivo is closed.
- Permanently Closed: For safety reasons, avoid the following routes: PR1.3 Vereda da Encumeada, PR7 Levada do Moinho, PR10 Levada do Furado, and PR20 Vereda do Jardim do Mar.
Our Recommendation: Always check the current trail status on the official IFCN (Forestry Institute) website before you hike. Remember that all non-residents are required to register online and pay the eco-tax via the SIMplifica portal.
Weather and Mountain Conditions
Today is perfect for excursions. Meteorologists predict mostly clear skies with temperatures up to 25°C. The north may see a few more clouds. The sea temperature in the south is a pleasant 19–20°C, ideal for swimming.
- Who this affects: All tourists, especially those heading to the mountains.
- What this means: Excellent conditions for both hiking and relaxing on the beach.
- What we recommend: If you are heading out early to the mountain ridges (Pico do Arieiro) or the eastern point of Ponta de São Lourenço, pack a windbreaker. Strong winds with gusts up to 40 km/h can occur in the early morning hours.

Warning for the East of the Island: Rescue Drill in Caniçal
Who this affects: Tourists heading to Ponta de São Lourenço, Prainha, or the town of Caniçal.
What’s happening: Today from 4:00 PM, a large-scale civil protection tactical drill simulating an industrial accident will take place in the industrial zone of Caniçal.
What this means: Do not be alarmed by the increased presence of fire trucks, ambulances, and police vehicles with sirens on. This is only a drill. We recommend avoiding the immediate vicinity of the industrial zone.
