Transport: Strong Winds Disrupt Airport, Accident on Highway
Monday in Madeira presents several travel challenges. Patience and good planning are key.
Cristiano Ronaldo Airport (FNC)
Extremely strong winds, with gusts reaching up to 84 km/h, have significantly complicated operations at the airport in Santa Cruz this morning. At least eight flights had to be diverted to other islands (such as Porto Santo) or were forced to circle. The disruptions affected airlines including Jet2, Ryanair, EasyJet, TAP, and Iberia.
- Who is affected: All passengers arriving in or departing from Madeira today.
- What this means: Expect significant delays and potential flight cancellations throughout the day.
- Our recommendation: Check your flight status online before heading to the airport and stay in contact with your airline.
Via Rápida Highway
Traffic on the island’s main highway was blocked this morning by a three-vehicle accident in the direction from Ribeira Brava to Machico. Emergency services were on the scene, and long traffic jams have formed.
- Who is affected: Drivers and passengers using the highway on the south coast.
- What this means: Delays ranging from tens of minutes to hours, especially for those travelling to the airport or the eastern part of the island.
- Our recommendation: If possible, avoid this section of the highway and use the old regional roads instead.
Hiking Trails and Levadas: PR1 to Pico do Areeiro Closed Today
The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has issued an important warning for all mountain hiking enthusiasts. Due to ongoing maintenance work, some trails are subject to restrictions.
- PR1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro ↔ Pico Ruivo): Due to maintenance, this iconic trail is open only on weekends (Friday to Sunday) until June 26, 2026. Today, Monday, it is completely CLOSED.
- Other permanently closed trails: Long-term closures also include the very popular PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde and PR7 Levada do Moinho. A complete list can be found on the official IFCN website.
Our recommendation: Do not enter closed sections under any circumstances. Plan today’s hike on one of the many open trails. Before every hike, check its current status and don’t forget the mandatory online registration in the SIMplifica system.
Weather: Windy in the Mountains, Sunny in Funchal
Today’s weather matches the warnings. While the north coast is overcast, Funchal and its surroundings are enjoying sunshine with temperatures up to 25°C. Be most cautious of the wind – in the mountains, gusts can reach up to 75 km/h, and on the eastern and western capes, 60 km/h. Waves of up to two meters are forming on the north coast.
- Our recommendation: For mountain hikes, pack a windproof jacket. For swimming in the ocean, choose sheltered bays or natural pools. The sunny area around Funchal is the ideal place for a walk today.
