Trail and Levada Status: What to Watch Out for Today

Today offers excellent hiking conditions, but careful planning is essential. Some of the most popular trails have temporary restrictions that could significantly impact your experience.

⚠️ Important: Restrictions on Levada das 25 Fontes (PR 6)

Who it affects: All hikers planning a trip to the Rabaçal area.
What this means in practice: A closed bypass on the 25 Fontes levada has turned a previously one-way section into a two-way path. This means crowds are meeting from both directions on a very narrow trail, causing bottlenecks and dangerous situations as people try to pass each other.
What we recommend: If you are determined to do this hike, start as early as possible (ideally before 9:00 AM). A safer and more enjoyable alternative is to choose a different, less crowded route today, such as Levada do Rei (PR 18) or a walk in the Fanal area.

PR 9 Caldeirão Verde: Open with Restrictions

Who it affects: Hikers heading to one of the most beautiful levadas in the Santana area.
What this means in practice: The main route to the Caldeirão Verde waterfall is fully accessible and in good condition. However, the connecting, more challenging section to Caldeirão do Inferno remains closed.
What we recommend: At the Caldeirão Verde waterfall, turn around and return the same way you came. Do not attempt to continue further.

Reminder: Tourist Fee on PR Trails

Remember that non-residents must pay a €3 fee to access the officially marked PR trails. Payment can be made online via the Simplifica portal. Checks by the forest guards (IFCN) are frequent, so be sure to have the QR code confirmation of payment ready on your phone.

Weather and Road Safety

The Mountains are Calling: Ideal Conditions for the Ridge Walk

Who it affects: Lovers of mountain traverses and viewpoints.
What this means in practice: Warmer temperatures are expected today, especially at higher altitudes. This means excellent conditions with good visibility for the hike between Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo (PR 1).
What we recommend: Do not underestimate the strength of the mountain sun—use sunscreen, wear a hat, and bring plenty of water.

Driving in Madeira: Exercise Extra Caution

Who it affects: All drivers with rental cars.
What this means in practice: Police statistics from last week show nearly 100 traffic accidents. Madeira’s roads are narrow, steep, and full of sharp turns.
What we recommend: Drive defensively, do not rush, and maintain a safe following distance. Stay fully focused on the mountain switchbacks.
