Trail and Mountain Status: All Closed
While the weather in Madeira is slowly calming down, the effects of Storm “Regina” are still being felt. For tourists, this means one thing above all: mountain and hiking trips are off the table for today. Safety comes first.
Official Hiking Trails (PRs and Levadas)
- Who is affected: All hiking enthusiasts.
- What this means in practice: The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has kept all official and recommended hiking trails (PRs) on the island closed today. This is due to a high risk of falling trees and rockslides following heavy rain and wind. Entering the trails is not only dangerous but may also result in fines.
- Our recommendation: Please respect the closure and do not take any risks. Postpone your plans for a levada walk or mountain trek until conditions stabilize in the coming days.
Snow in the Mountains: Pico do Areeiro Inaccessible
- Who is affected: Drivers and tourists heading to the highest peaks.
- What this means in practice: The highest points of the island, including Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo, are covered in snow. While a beautiful sight, the access roads are closed for safety reasons due to ice. Both the main road and the forest link from Eira do Serrado are impassable.
- Our recommendation: Do not attempt to drive to the peaks. You can safely view the snow cover from lower elevations or via webcams.
Transportation and Travel Around the Island
Transportation has also been affected. Expect delays at the airport and on the roads.
Air Travel: Check Your Flight Status
- Who is affected: Passengers arriving in or departing from Madeira today.
- What this means in practice: Cristiano Ronaldo Airport is still dealing with the aftermath of strong winds from the previous days. Operations are slowly returning to normal, and many flights may be delayed. The terminal is also more crowded than usual.
- Our recommendation: Regularly check your flight status on the airport’s website (ANA Aeroportos) and allow plenty of extra time for your journey.
Driving: Closures and Busy Funchal
- Who is affected: All drivers.
- What this means in practice: In the west of the island, around Ponta do Sol, expect local road closures due to a hill climb auto race. In the center of Funchal, anticipate heavier traffic and parking difficulties as several cruise ships are docked in the harbor.
- Our recommendation: If possible, avoid the Ponta do Sol area today. In Funchal, we suggest parking in one of the multi-story car parks (e.g., La Vie, Almirante Reis) and exploring the city center on foot. You can find more tips in our guide [LINK: How to Drive in Madeira].
Our Tips: What to Do in Madeira When the Mountains are Closed?
Today is a perfect day to explore the towns and enjoy indoor activities. Here are a few ideas:
- Explore Funchal: Visit the famous Mercado dos Lavradores, stroll through the historic Zona Velha, or enjoy a Madeira wine tasting at Blandy’s Wine Lodge. For more inspiration, see our article [LINK: What to See in Funchal].
- Visit a museum: Funchal offers several interesting museums, such as the CR7 Museum for football fans, the interactive Madeira Story Centre, or the Whale Museum in Caniçal.
- Watch the sea from a safe distance: You can witness the power of the ocean from safe spots like the coastal promenades in Funchal or from viewpoints. However, avoid piers and areas where waves could crash over.
