Hiking Trail Status: Important Mountain Restrictions

If you’re planning a hike today, pay close attention to the latest closures. The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has reported several significant changes. Also, remember that from January 2026, online booking and a fee will be required to access certain trails.

  • PR1 Vereda do Areeiro: The trail is only PARTIALLY open. Just the 1.2 km section from the radar parking lot to the Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint is accessible. The path to Pico Ruivo is closed; you must return the same way.
  • PR10 Levada do Furado: This entire trail is CLOSED due to a landslide.
  • PR3 Levada do Pico do Castelo (Porto Santo): This trail is closed for water pipe maintenance.
  • Good news: PR5 Vereda das Funduras is fully open again following maintenance.

What This Means for You:

A full hike between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo is not possible today. Choose an alternative open trail and always check its current status beforehand on the official IFCN website or the Madeira Trail Status app.

Funchal: Marathon, Cruise Ships, and Traffic Restrictions

The capital city is extremely busy today. The combination of a major international marathon and the arrival of three cruise ships with thousands of passengers means one thing: crowds and traffic disruptions.

Impact on Tourists and Drivers:

  • Road Closures: Expect street closures in the city center and along the coast, especially on the main Estrada Monumental in the Lido hotel zone.
  • Crowded Areas: The Monte Cable Car, the Mercado dos Lavradores market, and the historic center will be particularly busy, especially in the morning.
  • Delays: Travel to the airport or across the city may take significantly longer.

Our Recommendation:

If possible, postpone your visit to Funchal’s city center until the late afternoon or evening. For car journeys, use the highway (Via Rápida) instead of the coastal roads.

Weather and Safety: Wind, Waves, and Roads

Today’s weather calls for increased caution, especially at sea and on the roads.

What to Watch Out For:

  • High Surf Advisory: The port authority has issued a high wave warning, effective until Tuesday. Swimming at unprotected beaches, particularly on the north coast, is dangerous. Whale and dolphin watching boat trips may be canceled or very rough.
  • Air Travel: Stronger winds near the airport in Santa Cruz may cause delays or landing complications. We recommend monitoring your flight status.
  • Driving: Showers can make roads slippery. Drive carefully, especially on mountain roads.

A Practical Warning

Local police are warning of scammers posing as electricity company employees. Although they primarily target residents, be cautious if you are staying in private accommodation and do not let anyone into the property without verification.
