Top Story: Reservations and Fees for PR Trails Are Now in Effect
If you are planning to hike any of the official tourist routes (marked as PR), be aware of the new rules in effect since the beginning of this year. Entry requires a pre-booked online reservation and payment of a fee of approximately 3 euros.
- Who does this affect? All tourists heading to the marked PR trails (Percursos Recomendados).
- What does this mean in practice? Reservations are made through the government’s SIMplifica portal. Without a valid confirmation (on your phone or printed), you risk a fine during spot checks. The goal is to protect the unique Laurissilva forest and regulate the number of people on the busiest trails.
- What do we recommend? Plan your trips in advance, as spots on popular routes like PR 6 (25 Fontes) or PR 1 (Pico do Areeiro) can fill up quickly. Always keep your reservation with you.
Current Status of Trails and Mountain Roads
Before every hike, check the current status of your route. The weather in the mountains changes rapidly, and landslides can occur. Here is an overview of the most important changes:
Trails Closed Indefinitely
Due to landslides and unstable terrain, the following trails are completely impassable until further notice:
- PR 5 Vereda das Funduras
- PR 18 Levada do Rei
We strongly advise respecting these closures. Entering damaged trails is life-threatening.
Trails with Restrictions
- PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro: The ridge trail between the highest peaks is still only partially open. You can only access the first 1.2 km section to the Pedra Rija viewpoint. A full reopening following last year’s fires is expected sometime in April.
- PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes: The route is fully operational but operates on a one-way system for better flow and safety. To return to the Rabaçal car park, use the newly opened “Bypass” route.
Open Roads
The mountain road connecting the Eira do Serrado viewpoint and the Pico do Areeiro car park is currently open without any issues.
Travel Tip: Sporting Event on Porto Santo
Heading to the neighboring island of Porto Santo by ferry? The major padel tournament “Março Azul” (Blue March) is taking place there until March 28th.
- Who does this affect? Tourists who are on Porto Santo or are planning a day trip from Funchal.
- What does this mean in practice? You can experience an authentic sporting atmosphere. However, expect increased demand for tickets on the Lobo Marinho ferry and higher occupancy rates for accommodation.
- What do we recommend? If you don’t have reservations, arrange your transport and any necessary accommodation as soon as possible.
