Hiking Trail Status: What to Watch Out For

Before heading to the mountains, always check for the latest restrictions. The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has updated the status of several key trails following recent landslides and due to ongoing maintenance.

🔴 Fully Closed Trails

  • PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada: This trail is closed for safety reasons.
  • PR 10 Levada do Furado: This popular levada from Ribeiro Frio to Portela is out of service due to a landslide.
  • PR 3 Levada do Pico do Castelo: Maintenance work is underway on a water pipe along the trail.

🟡 Trails with Significant Restrictions

  • PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro ↔ Pico Ruivo): Only the western route through the tunnels is passable. The eastern, more challenging path via Pico das Torres remains closed.
  • PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes: Due to repairs, the one-way bypass is temporarily closed. This means the main narrow section of the levada is now two-way traffic.
What this means in practice: During peak hours (between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM), there is a high risk of major congestion and crowding.
Our recommendation: If you plan to hike the 25 Fontes, start as early as possible in the morning (ideally before 9:00 AM) or go later in the afternoon.

Good News from the Laurisilva Forest

Wildlife and nature lovers can celebrate. The Madeiran government has officially canceled the controversial plan to pave the “Caminho das Ginjas” road, which runs through the heart of the Laurisilva laurel forest (a UNESCO World Heritage site) in the São Vicente area.
What this means in practice: The area will retain its original, untouched character and will not be disturbed by construction. The path will remain in its natural state, perfect for hiking.

Carnival Culminates: Fat Tuesday in Funchal

Today marks the climax of the Carnival celebrations in Madeira. This afternoon, the satirical and spontaneous “Cortejo Trapalhão” parade will make its way through the center of Funchal, offering a fantastic display of local humor.
What this means in practice: It’s a great opportunity to experience an authentic local atmosphere. Don’t forget to try the traditional Carnival sweets – fried doughnuts called “Sonhos” or molasses-coated fritters known as “Malassadas”, which you’ll find in every bakery (pastelaria) today.

Transportation and Safety

Be cautious when traveling around the island. This morning, accidents were reported on the Via Rápida highway near Machico and in São Vicente, which may cause local delays. In the evening, we recommend exercising increased caution in downtown Funchal, especially around bars and nightclubs. Groups of fans are still present following the weekend’s football match, and an isolated incident was reported last night.
