Traffic: Beware of Closures and Delays

Today brings several traffic complications that may affect your plans. Please be cautious and expect delays.

⛔ Encumeada Tunnel Closed

  • Who is affected? Drivers and tourists heading from the center of the island (Ribeira Brava) to the north coast (São Vicente, Porto Moniz).
  • What this means: This key route through the central mountain range is closed or has significant delays following a serious traffic accident.
  • Our recommendation: If you are heading north, take an alternative route via Serra de Água or drive around the island using the coastal roads. Avoid the Encumeada pass today.

⚠️ Caution in Funchal on Estrada Monumental

  • Who is affected? Both drivers and pedestrians in the Lido hotel zone in Funchal.
  • What this means: Following an accident last night, traffic on the road and sidewalks may be restricted in the area due to repairs on a damaged streetlight pole.
  • Our recommendation: Proceed with extra caution in this area. If you are driving, expect minor delays.

Weather: A February Summer and What to Watch For

Funchal experienced a tropical night with temperatures above 21°C, promising an exceptionally warm and sunny day. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy the coast, but don’t forget a few key precautions.

  • Hydration and Protection: Even in February, the sun is strong. Drink plenty of water and use sunscreen.
  • Wind in the Mountains: This type of warm weather is often accompanied by stronger winds at higher elevations. If you’re planning a mountain hike, be sure to pack a windbreaker.

Hiking Trails and Levadas: Current Status

Before any hike, always check the official status of the trails. The following important restrictions are in effect today:

  • ⛔ CLOSED: PR 10 Levada do Furado. The trail from Ribeiro Frio to Portela is closed due to the risk of landslides. Do not ignore the closure signs; it is dangerous.
  • ⛔ CLOSED: PR 3 Levada do Pico do Castelo. This route is out of service due to construction work.
  • ✅ OPEN: PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro. The famous ridge walk between Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo is passable. The access route PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo is also open.

Recommendation: Instead of the closed Levada do Furado (PR 10), opt for the short and safe walk from Ribeiro Frio to the Balcões viewpoint (PR 11).

Ongoing Carnival Festivities in Funchal

Carnival celebrations in Madeira are still underway and are affecting city life.

  • Crowds and Traffic: Expect large crowds and heavier traffic in downtown Funchal, especially around the harbor and Avenida do Mar. The atmosphere, however, is festive.
  • Police Checks: The police are warning against excessive alcohol consumption and have announced increased road checks. If you indulge in the local poncha, use a taxi or ride-sharing services like Bolt and Uber for transportation.
  • Nightlife: The well-known Copacabana club at the casino complex is temporarily closed.
