Mountains and Weather: Prepare for Winter Conditions
Snow on the Peaks and Near-Zero Temperatures
If you’re heading to the highest parts of the island today, be prepared for true winter weather. Meteorologists are warning of possible snowfall on Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo, where temperatures will be hovering around the freezing point.
- Who is affected? Anyone planning to travel to the highest peaks by car or on foot.
- What this means in practice: Roads leading to Pico do Areeiro may be icy or temporarily closed by the police. Do not underestimate the need for warm and waterproof clothing.
- Our recommendation: Check current road conditions (e.g., via webcams) before you set out. Consider opting for trips in the lower, warmer areas in the south of the island instead.
Sea Alert: Large Waves Approaching
Starting Friday evening, very high waves are expected on the north coast of Madeira and on the island of Porto Santo, potentially reaching heights of up to 12 meters. An orange weather warning is in effect.
- Who is affected? Visitors to the north coast (Porto Moniz, Seixal) and travelers to Porto Santo.
- What this means in practice: It is dangerous to be near the coastline and on piers. Ferries and tour boats may be canceled over the weekend.
- Our recommendation: Avoid the north coast. If you are planning to travel to Porto Santo, confirm your connection directly with the carrier.
Trail Status: Restrictions on Popular Routes
PR1 Vereda do Areeiro is Only Partially Open
Madeira’s most famous ridge walk between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo is currently impassable. For safety reasons, only the section from the Pico do Areeiro car park to the Ninho da Manta viewpoint and on to the Pedra Rija point (approx. 1.2 km) is open.
- Who is affected? All hikers who planned to complete the full ridge traverse.
- What this means in practice: You must turn around at Pedra Rija and return the same way. The rest of the route, including the tunnels, is closed.
- Our recommendation: Enjoy the initial part of the trail with its iconic views, but do not plan for a full-day hike.
PR10 Levada do Furado is Completely Closed
The popular route from Ribeiro Frio to Portela is temporarily closed due to a landslide. Access to the trail is strictly prohibited.
- Who is affected? Hikers planning a trek in the Ribeiro Frio area.
- What this means in practice: The trail cannot be accessed for safety reasons.
- Our recommendation: As a great and short alternative in the same area, we recommend the nearby PR11 Vereda dos Balcões.
Transport and Practical Tips
Bolt and Uber Services May Experience Outages
An administrative dispute regarding licenses for ride-sharing services (known locally as TVDE) is currently underway in Madeira. This may lead to a temporary shortage of available cars on the Bolt and Uber apps.
- Who is affected? Travelers who rely on ride-sharing apps for transport.
- What this means in practice: You may have to wait longer than usual for a car, or you might not see any available cars in the app at all.
- Our recommendation: Keep the phone number of a local taxi service handy or check public transport connections. Do not rely solely on the apps.
Reminder: Trail Entrance Fees
Don’t forget that since the beginning of the year, non-residents are required to book access to selected hiking trails and pay the fee through the SIMplifica portal. This will help you avoid potential fines.
