Today’s Top Story: New Rules for the PR1 Ridge Trail
The island’s most attractive and popular trail, PR1 Vereda do Areeiro, which connects Madeira’s third-highest and highest peaks, is fully open again after maintenance. However, access is now governed by completely new and strict rules that you must know before planning your trip.
What’s Changing in Practice?
- One-Way Traffic: From the Pedra Rija viewpoint (approximately one-third of the way from Pico do Areeiro), the trail is now mandatory one-way towards Pico Ruivo. Returning the same way back to Areeiro is no longer possible.
- Planning Your Return: From the summit of Pico Ruivo, you must descend via a different route – most commonly the PR1.2 to the Achada do Teixeira car park, or the more challenging PR1.1 to the village of Ilha. You will need to arrange transportation back, for example, by taxi.
- Fee and Reservation: Access to the trail now costs €10.50 per person. You must reserve and pay for your spot in advance online through the official SIMplifica portal.
- Possible Delays: Finishing touches may still be underway on the trail this upcoming weekend, which could cause short delays.
Recommendation: Do not go to Pico do Areeiro without a prior online reservation. Carefully plan the logistics of your return from Pico Ruivo, as you will not be able to get back to your car at Areeiro.
Weather and Tips for Today: Raincoats Instead of Swimsuits
Friday’s weather on the island is better suited for indoor activities. According to meteorologists, the sky will be mostly overcast with showers, which are expected to be more frequent and intense, especially on the north coast and in higher elevations. Temperatures will range between 16 and 21 °C.
What This Means for Your Plans
Who is affected? All tourists, especially those who planned hikes in the high mountains or a day at the beach.
Recommendation: It’s best to skip beach activities today. If you plan to hike, choose one of the lower-elevation levadas in the south and be prepared for slippery terrain. An ideal plan for the day is to visit Funchal, its local markets, museums, or wine cellars for a Madeira wine tasting.
Cultural Tip: Folklore Celebrations in Camacha
Today’s weather is perfect for a visit to the town of Camacha, located just a short drive from Funchal. The town is commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of legendary folklore singer Maria Ascensão. Camacha is also famous for its traditional wickerwork craft and offers a great opportunity to soak up authentic Madeiran culture on a day when the mountains are not very welcoming.
Caution on the Roads: Wet Conditions and Police Checks
Police statistics from last week serve as a clear warning to all drivers. There were 69 accidents on Madeira’s roads, resulting in 19 injuries. Combined with today’s showers, this means one thing: drive with extreme caution.
Advice for drivers: Slow down, especially on switchbacks and unfamiliar roads. Wet surfaces can be very treacherous. Additionally, the police are focusing on drink-driving checks. If you plan on trying the traditional poncha, leave your car at the hotel and take a taxi back.
Practical Information: Prices and Weekend Events
Expect Higher Prices
The high demand from tourists is reflected in prices. According to recent data, accommodation and dining costs have increased by nearly 8% year-over-year. When visiting restaurants and cafés, especially in tourist centers, expect a higher bill than in previous years. To save money, consider having lunch at less-frequented “snack bars” popular with the locals.
Weekend on the Royal Path (Caminho Real)
Starting tomorrow, Saturday, May 16th, the 9th edition of the popular walk around the island along the historic Royal Path will begin. If you are hiking along the coast this weekend, you may encounter large organized groups. Consider it a great opportunity to experience an authentic atmosphere and join the locals at a café along the way.
