Major Update: Restrictions on the PR1 Trail from Pico do Areeiro

Today’s most important update for all mountain hiking enthusiasts is the partial closure of the island’s most popular trail. If you were planning the spectacular hike between Madeira’s highest peaks, you’ll need to adjust your plans.

Status of the PR1 Vereda do Areeiro Trail

  • Who it affects: All hikers planning the route from Pico do Areeiro.
  • What this means in practice: The trail is currently passable ONLY in the section from the radar on Pico do Areeiro to the Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint. This is approximately 1.2 km one way. The eastern part of the trail leading via Pico das Torres to Pico Ruivo is closed. Therefore, the full-day traverse is not possible.
  • Our recommendation: Don’t cancel your trip to Pico do Areeiro; the views from the initial section and from Miradouro da Pedra Rija are still worth it. However, be prepared to return the same way back to the car park. To reach Pico Ruivo, choose the alternative route from Achada do Teixeira (PR 1.2).

Other Closed Trails

According to information from the IFCN (Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation), the following trails are also currently completely closed due to landslides and maintenance:

  • PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada
  • PR 10 Levada do Furado

Tip: Remember that since the beginning of the year, a €3 fee applies to non-residents on selected trails (including PR1).

Safety on Roads and Trails

Winter weather with occasional showers leaves its mark on both roads and hiking trails. Please exercise increased caution.

Be Cautious Even on Easier Levadas

  • Who it affects: Hikers on all types of levadas.
  • What happened: Rescue services had to assist an injured tourist on the otherwise easy Levada do Norte.
  • What this means in practice: Even seemingly easy trails can be treacherous after rain. Wet stones and mud are extremely slippery, especially on unfenced sections.
  • Our recommendation: Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear, even for simple walks along levadas. Do not underestimate any trail and pay close attention to the ground beneath your feet.

Traffic: ER222 Open and a Warning for Drivers

  • Who it affects: All drivers, especially those on scooters and motorcycles.
  • What this means in practice: The good news is that the ER222 road between Canhas and Ponta do Sol is fully operational. On the other hand, a warning is in effect due to several motorcyclist accidents in the last 24 hours. Roads are often slippery after rain.
  • Our recommendation: If you have rented a scooter, drive with extreme caution and defensively. Adjust your speed to the road conditions.

Practical Information from Funchal and Surroundings

What’s happening in the capital, and what should you prepare for in the coming days?

Cristiano Ronaldo Statue Access Temporarily Restricted

  • Who it affects: Football fans and tourists heading to the CR7 Museum.
  • What happened: The statue was targeted by vandals during the night.
  • What this means in practice: It is likely that the area around the statue will be cordoned off with police tape for investigation and cleaning. Access may be temporarily restricted.
  • Our recommendation: If a photo with the statue is on your to-do list, check the situation on-site before you go.

Flying Out on Friday? Beware of Taxi Driver Protest

  • Who it affects: All travelers departing or needing transport on Friday, January 23rd.
  • What this means in practice: The taxi drivers’ association has announced a “slow-drive” protest for this day. Significant traffic disruptions are expected in Funchal, especially on the road to the airport.
  • Our recommendation: If you are flying out on Friday, leave for the airport with significant extra time. Consider alternative transportation if possible.

Rainy Afternoon Tip: The New PLAZA Madeira Center

  • Who it affects: All visitors to Funchal.
  • What’s happening: The shopping center formerly known as La Vie is having its grand opening today under the new brand, PLAZA Madeira.
  • Our recommendation: If you get caught in the rain, this could be a good place to spend the afternoon. Keep an eye out for potential opening discounts or special events.
