Trail Status: Do Not Attempt the PR1 Vereda do Areeiro Today

The most important information for all mountain hiking enthusiasts: The iconic PR1 – Vereda do Areeiro ridge trail is completely closed today, Tuesday, June 16th. The closure is due to ongoing maintenance and repair work following landslides. This will remain in effect until June 26th, after which the trail will be open daily, but only for one-way travel from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo.

  • Who this affects: All hikers who were planning the trek between Madeira’s highest peaks.
  • What this means in practice: Attempting to access the trail is forbidden and dangerous.
  • What we recommend: If you want to conquer the highest peak, Pico Ruivo, today, choose the alternative, easier, and fully open route: PR 1.2 from the Achada do Teixeira car park. It is a two-way trail and offers magnificent views.

Ocean Safety: Where to Swim (and Where Not To)

The official swimming season is in full swing, but statistics from the beginning of the year are a warning. All drowning fatalities in Madeira have occurred in areas without lifeguard supervision. Ocean currents can be extremely treacherous.

  • Who this affects: Anyone planning to swim in the ocean.
  • What this means in practice: Swimming at wild, unguarded beaches and natural pools poses a real risk.
  • What we recommend: Only use official, supervised beaches and swimming complexes like the Lido in Funchal, or the beaches in Porto Moniz, Seixal, and Calheta. The good news is that the neighboring island of Porto Santo has just been awarded Blue Flags, which guarantee the highest water quality and safety standards.

Weather and Trip Tips for Today

Forecast: More Clouds and Cooler in the Mountains

Expect mostly cloudy skies today, especially on the north coast and at higher altitudes, where light showers may occur. Temperatures in Funchal will be around 24°C. The south coast will be slightly better for sunbathing, but expect some clouds there as well. Don’t forget to pack a waterproof and windproof layer for the mountains and the north.

Planning a Trip to Fanal? Go Early in the Morning or Late in the Afternoon

The Fanal laurel forest is at the peak of its popularity, which unfortunately brings some downsides. During the day, especially around noon, you can expect traffic jams, overflowing car parks, and large crowds. To truly enjoy the magical atmosphere of the ancient trees, we recommend a simple trick.

  • Who this affects: Drivers and photographers heading to Fanal.
  • What this means in practice: Between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM, you risk not finding a parking spot, and the crowds can spoil the experience.
  • What we recommend: Visit Fanal either early in the morning (before 9:00 AM) or late in the afternoon (after 4:00 PM). You’ll avoid the biggest rush and can enjoy the mystical silence and fog in peace.
