What to Expect in Madeira Today

Today, Saturday, is set to be a day of grand celebrations, but also changeable mountain weather. We have a practical summary of the most important news for you, from evening events to the current status of hiking trails.

1. Evening Tips: Celebrations from Funchal to Calheta

  • Fireworks in Funchal (Festival do Atlântico): Don’t miss the third competitive evening of the spectacular pyromusical festival. Today at 10:00 PM, a show by Ukraine will light up the sky over the harbour. The best views are from the Avenida do Mar promenade or one of the rooftop bars. Before the fireworks, we recommend visiting the Mercadinho Sunset market at Praça do Povo.
  • Traditional Festivities in Calheta (Marchas Populares): If you’re looking for an authentic experience, head to Calheta. A giant St. John’s parade with over 800 participants will take place from 10:00 PM. However, expect road closures and very limited parking. We recommend arriving well in advance.

2. Mountains and Hiking: The Weather Calls for Caution

Today’s forecast predicts overcast conditions, especially in the north and inland, with a chance of light rain or drizzle. In the mountains, this means fog, reduced visibility, and slippery surfaces.

  • Hiking Recommendations: Equip yourself with a waterproof jacket, sturdy shoes with good grip, and an extra warm layer. Check the latest webcam footage before you set out.
  • Respect Nature in Fanal: The forestry service is repairing damaged fences in the Fanal forest. We strongly remind you to always stay on the marked trails. Tourists face heavy fines (up to €750) for entering restricted areas.

3. Current Trail Status and Important Warnings

  • PR1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro – Pico Ruivo): The trail is open with restrictions. The eastern section (via Pico das Torres) is completely CLOSED for safety reasons. Only the western route through the tunnels is accessible, but extreme caution is required today due to slippery surfaces.
  • Online Booking: Don’t forget that for the most popular trails (e.g., Caldeirão Verde, Ponta de São Lourenço), you must purchase your entry ticket online in advance through the SIMplifica portal.

4. Good News for Travelers

  • Machico Beach is Reopened: Great news! The popular sandy beach in Machico, which was temporarily closed due to water contamination, has been fully operational again since noon today. Analysis has confirmed the water is clean and safe for swimming.
  • Taxi Fares Remain Unchanged: The introduction of new taxi tariffs has been postponed for 60 days. Therefore, prices will remain stable for the time being, so you don’t need to worry about any confusion during your holiday.

5. Weekend Tip: Cherry Festival

This weekend (June 20th and 21st), the traditional Cherry Festival (Festa da Cereja) takes place in the mountain village of Jardim da Serra. Although this year’s harvest was smaller, the atmosphere, full of local specialities, music, and crafts, is definitely worth a visit. Parking in the area is difficult, so consider using public transport.
