Hiking and Trails: What to Expect?

Friday’s weather, with temperatures around 24°C, is ideal for hiking. But before you head out, please read these important on-the-ground updates.

PR 1 (Pico do Arieiro – Pico Ruivo): Open This Weekend

  • Who does this affect? Anyone planning to hike between Madeira’s highest peaks.
  • What does this mean in practice? Madeira’s most famous trail is open only on weekends (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) until June 26th. This means the PR 1 trail is accessible today and throughout the weekend. However, only the western route through the tunnels is open. The eastern path via Pico das Torres remains closed.
  • What we recommend: Start as early as possible in the morning, as the trail will be very crowded on the weekend. Don’t forget the mandatory online registration and the €3 fee per person (via the Simplifica portal).

Fanal: Respect the Protected Zones

  • Who does this affect? Visitors to the Fanal Laurisilva forest (a UNESCO World Heritage site).
  • What does this mean in practice? Following an incident where tourists damaged protective fencing, there is increased surveillance in the area. The fences protect the roots of the ancient trees from damage. Climbing over them or straying from marked paths is strictly forbidden and subject to a fine.
  • What we recommend: Please use only the official openings in the fence, which are located every few meters. Treat the local nature with the utmost respect.

Warning: Fire Ban in Effect

  • Who does this affect? All tourists and hikers in natural areas.
  • What does this mean in practice? After a recent nighttime fire in the Canhas area, authorities are issuing a strong reminder that the island is at high risk of wildfires. Any use of open flames or discarding of cigarette butts near forests and vegetation is strictly prohibited.
  • What we recommend: Be extremely cautious. For barbecues, use only designated and safe picnic areas.

Swimming and Beaches: Changes and News

The summer season is in full swing, and with it comes maintenance and inspections of popular swimming spots.

Machico: Temporary Swimming Ban

  • Who does this affect? Visitors to the popular sandy beach in Machico.
  • What does this mean in practice? Due to temporarily poor water quality, there is a current ban on entering the sea at the beach. Authorities are awaiting the results of new tests, which will determine when it can reopen.
  • What we recommend: Pay close attention to the flags on the beach. For today, it’s best to choose another location, such as the newly renovated beach in Santa Cruz.

Doca do Cavacas: Closing Next Week

  • Who does this affect? Fans of the natural swimming pools in Funchal.
  • What does this mean in practice? The popular volcanic pools at Doca do Cavacas (Poças do Gomes) will be completely closed from Monday, June 22, to Friday, June 26, 2026, for the replacement of the wooden walkways.
  • What we recommend: Take this weekend as your last chance to visit. From Monday onwards, consider alternatives like the Lido or Ponta Gorda swimming complexes.

Tip: The Newly Renovated Beach in Santa Cruz

  • Who does this affect? Families with children and anyone looking for modern facilities.
  • What does this mean in practice? The Praia das Palmeiras beach complex in Santa Cruz has just undergone extensive modernization. It now offers a renovated pool with accessible entry, new showers, changing rooms, and enhanced lifeguard services.
  • What we recommend: If you’re on the eastern side of the island, this is an excellent and safe choice for today.

Practical Information for Travelers

Weather and Boat Trip Tip

Today’s weather is warm, though partly cloudy. The main news, however, is the perfectly calm ocean, with waves on the south coast measuring less than one meter. These are ideal conditions for whale and dolphin watching boat trips with a minimal risk of seasickness.

Healthcare Strike: What It Means for You

Today (Friday, June 19) there is an ongoing strike by healthcare personnel. Emergency services (A&E, ambulance service 112) are fully guaranteed. However, routine, non-urgent treatments at public health centers may be significantly limited. For minor health issues, we recommend considering a visit to a private clinic.

Weekend Tip: Saturday Fireworks in Funchal

Don’t miss the next part of the spectacular Atlantic Festival. This Saturday, June 20, at 10:30 PM, a competitive pyromusical show by the Ukrainian team will light up the Funchal bay. Expect the city center to be crowded, so head out early or book a spot at a bar with a view. You can listen to the fireworks’ soundtrack live on the radio at 105.9 FM.
