Trail Status and New Fees: What You Need to Know Before Your Hike

The most important news for all lovers of Madeira’s mountains concerns trail rules and conditions. Please pay close attention to avoid any inconvenience.

PR1 Ridge Trail (Pico do Areeiro ↔ Pico Ruivo) is Partially Closed

The island’s most popular route, PR1 Vereda do Areeiro, is currently only accessible on the section from Pico do Areeiro to the Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint (approx. 1.2 km). The eastern part of the route via Pico das Torres is completely closed for safety reasons. Therefore, it is not possible to cross between the two highest peaks.

  • Who does this affect? All hikers planning to cross between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo.
  • What does this mean in practice? You cannot complete the entire PR1 trail.
  • What do we recommend? To reach the highest peak, Pico Ruivo (1862 m), take the alternative, fully open, and safe route PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo from the car park at Achada do Teixeira.

Mandatory Fees and Registration on PR Trails

The Regional Government and the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) are strongly advising of a new fee system for non-residents to access the recommended walking routes (PR), which has been in effect since the beginning of the year. This is being promoted alongside the information campaign “Discover Madeira Step by Step.”

  • Who does this affect? All international tourists heading to the recommended walking routes (PR).
  • What does this mean in practice? Before entering a trail, you must pay the fee and be registered in the online SIMplifica system. Checks may be conducted at access points to popular levadas and trails.
  • What do we recommend? Plan your hikes in advance. Make your payment and reservation online through the government portal. Leaflets with QR codes directing you to the portal are available at tourist information centers and hotels. Don’t forget sturdy footwear, water, and a headlamp for some routes.

Weather and Transport: A Great Day for Travel

After a stormy start to the month, when Storm “Regina” complicated air travel, the situation has completely calmed down. The weather today is ideal for any activity.

  • Who does this affect? All travelers, drivers, and hikers.
  • What does this mean in practice? Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport is operating without any wind-related delays. The weather on the island is sunny, with spring-like temperatures around 14–20 °C. High surf warnings have now been lifted.
  • What do we recommend? Take advantage of the perfect conditions for a road trip around the island, a visit to viewpoints, or a walk along the coast. Today is made for travel.

Culture and Gastronomy: Funchal Prepares for Spring Festivals

If you are planning a stay in Madeira at the turn of March and April, you can look forward to two major gastronomic events.

  • Who is this for? Lovers of chocolate, rum, and culinary experiences.
  • What does this mean in practice? Funchal will host the “Mercado do Chocolate” (March 29 – April 4) and the prestigious “Madeira Rum Festival” (April 14–18).
  • What do we recommend? Although the festivals are still a few weeks away, online ticket sales for exclusive tastings and masterclasses have already begun. If you are interested, we recommend purchasing them in advance, as they tend to sell out quickly.
