Labour Day: Supermarkets Closed and Limited Transport

Today, on Labour Day, public holiday schedules are in effect across the island. If you’re planning a big shopping trip, it’s best to postpone it until tomorrow.

  • Who does this affect? Anyone needing to do grocery shopping or planning to travel by bus.
  • What this means in practice: All large supermarkets (Pingo Doce, Continente) and shopping centres are closed. Public transport, including city bus lines in Funchal, is operating on a significantly reduced Sunday and public holiday schedule.
  • Our recommendation: For small purchases, use local shops or petrol stations. If travelling by bus, check departure times in advance and expect longer waits between services. Allow extra time for your journey to the airport.

Trail Status: PR1 Partially Closed and Entry Fee

For mountain hiking enthusiasts, we have two key updates concerning the most popular routes.

Closure on PR1 Vereda do Areeiro

  • Who does this affect? Hikers planning to traverse the ridge between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo.
  • What this means in practice: The PR1 trail is only accessible for a short section from Pico do Areeiro to the Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint (approx. 1.2 km). The subsequent section towards Pico Ruivo is closed from both directions for safety reasons. A complete traverse is not possible today.
  • Our recommendation: Please respect the entry ban and do not cross the barriers. You can still enjoy the short walk to the first viewpoint. To ascend Pico Ruivo, choose the alternative PR1.2 route from the Achada do Teixeira car park.

Entry Fee for PR Trails

We’d like to remind you that since the beginning of the year, a tourist tax of €3 applies to non-residents on marked PR trails. Payment must be made online via the Simplifica portal.

Weather and Safety: Warning for the North Coast

While the south of the island is enjoying calm weather, the north is showing its wilder side.

  • Who does this affect? Visitors to the north coast (e.g., Porto Moniz, Seixal) and the island of Porto Santo.
  • What this means in practice: Meteorologists have issued a yellow warning for high waves, which could exceed 4 metres. The natural lava pools may be closed for safety reasons.
  • Our recommendation: It’s best to postpone any plans to swim in Porto Moniz or Seixal today. Avoid walking on piers and unprotected cliffs. Dolphin and whale watching boat trips from Funchal and the south coast are operating without restrictions.

Funchal in Bloom: The Spectacular Flower Festival Has Begun!

Saving the best for last – Funchal has come alive with one of the most beautiful events of the year. The month-long Festa da Flor (Flower Festival) is in full swing.

  • Who does this affect? All visitors to Funchal and lovers of culture, flowers, and gastronomy.
  • What this means in practice: The city centre, especially Avenida Arriaga, is filled with magnificent flower carpets, and the popular local produce market is open. However, expect large crowds, traffic restrictions, and very difficult parking.
  • Our recommendation: Park your car further from the centre and explore festive Funchal on foot. The atmosphere is absolutely unique – don’t miss it!
