Funchal Under Pressure: Thousands of Tourists in the Streets
If you’re heading to Funchal today, be prepared for exceptional crowds. Three large cruise ships (AIDAcosma, Azura, and Mein Schiff Relax) have docked in the port, bringing over 16,000 visitors to the island. What’s more, one of the ships is staying overnight, so the hustle and bustle won’t let up in the evening.
Who Is Affected and What Does This Mean?
- Visitors to Funchal: This affects anyone planning to visit the city center, the promenade, the Monte cable cars, the Mercado dos Lavradores market, or the historic Zona Velha (Old Town).
- In practice, expect: Long queues at attractions, full restaurants and cafes, heavy traffic around the port, and generally far more people on the streets than usual.
What Do We Recommend?
If you don’t like crowds, it’s best to skip Funchal today. This is the perfect opportunity to explore other parts of the island. If you are staying in the city, be sure to make dinner reservations in advance, especially at popular establishments.
Warning in the Mountains: Key Trails Are Closed
If you’re planning a mountain hike, pay close attention. Authorities have closed several very popular routes due to safety concerns (landslides, trail damage). This is not a recommendation; it is a mandatory closure.
Currently Fully Closed Trails:
- PR 10 Levada do Furado (Ribeiro Frio – Lamaceiros)
- PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada
- PR 7 Levada do Moinho
- PR 3 Levada do Pico do Castelo
- PR 16 Levada Fajã do Rodrigues
A major restriction also applies to the iconic PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro ridge trail, which is only accessible up to the Ninho da Manta viewpoint (1.2 km from Pico do Arieiro). The path between the Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo peaks is therefore closed.
What Does This Mean and What Should You Do?
- For all hikers in the mountains: These closures are in place due to real danger. Please respect them and do not enter the damaged sections.
- Our recommendation: Before every hike, check the current trail status on the official IFCN website. Prepare a backup plan in case your chosen route is closed. Remember that online registration and a fee via the SIMplifica portal are required for all marked trails.
Coastal Weather: Calm Seas Despite Warnings
Although meteorologists issued warnings for strong waves, the situation on the coast (especially in the south) is surprisingly calm today. The sea is nearly flat, making it perfect for walks along the ocean. Nevertheless, remain cautious, particularly on the north coast, where conditions can change very quickly.
