Weather and Conditions: A Perfect Day for Exploring
We have great news! The weather today is perfect for all activities. The forecast promises minimal clouds and a light breeze, which means perfect visibility from viewpoints and mountain peaks. The rough sea warning has also been lifted, so swimming conditions are improving. Nevertheless, remain cautious and always respect the flags on the beaches. Unfortunately, at the popular Praia Formosa in Funchal, some tourists were once again seen ignoring safety signs warning of falling rocks.
- Who this affects: All tourists on the island.
- What this means in practice: Take advantage of one of the best days for more challenging hikes (e.g., Pico do Areeiro) or coastal walks.
- Our recommendation: Don’t forget sunscreen and plenty of water. On the beaches, follow lifeguards’ instructions and respect the signage.
Funchal Buzzes with Carnival and Cruise Ship Crowds
The Carnival atmosphere is in full swing in the capital today. On the main avenue, Avenida Arriaga, you’ll find a traditional market where you can taste local specialties like “malasadas” or “sonhos” and soak up the festive mood. However, be prepared for large crowds.
What to Expect in Funchal:
- Huge number of visitors: Large cruise ships are docked in the port today, bringing over 11,000 passengers and crew members into the city.
- Transportation and services: Expect fuller restaurants, cafes, and heavier traffic for taxis and buses in the city center.
- Our recommendation: If you want to enjoy a quiet dinner, book a table in advance or choose an establishment away from the main tourist thoroughfares.
Trail Status and Mountain Safety: Respect the Signs!
Despite the beautiful weather, rescue teams are dealing with several incidents in the mountains today. These serve as a stark reminder for everyone who underestimates the difficulty of Madeira’s terrain. Safety must always come first.
Important Updates from the Trails:
- ⚠️ Warning for PR 17 (Caminho do Pináculo e Folhadal): A group of young tourists got lost after intentionally leaving the marked trail. A rescue was required. Never leave the officially marked paths! There are no shortcuts, and attempting to find one can be fatal.
- ⚠️ Restriction on PR 6 (Levada das 25 Fontes): Since February 11, the one-way bypass on this popular route is temporarily closed. While the main trail remains open, this section now has two-way traffic. Expect significant ‘traffic jams’ and the need to navigate past oncoming hikers. We strongly recommend starting either very early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
- Rescue Operation in the Porto Moniz Area: A search and rescue operation is underway in the Ribeira da Janela area. If you are hiking in the northwest of the island, be extremely cautious and do not enter any potential closed-off zones.
The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has recently deployed drones to monitor forests and provide faster assistance. For tourists, this means increased safety, but also a request: do not disturb them if you encounter them on the trails.
