Crowds in Funchal: Cruise Ship, Carnival, and What to Expect
Downtown Funchal is busier than usual today. There are two reasons for this: the cruise ship Costa Fortuna, with approximately 3,000 passengers, is docked in the port until 5:00 PM, and final preparations for the main Carnival week are underway, including the installation of grandstands along Avenida do Mar.
Who Does This Affect?
Anyone planning to visit the center of Funchal, especially the port area, the Mercado dos Lavradores market, and the lower station of the Monte cable car.
What This Means for You:
- Larger Crowds: Expect significantly more people on the streets between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
- Longer Queues: Expect longer waiting times for the Monte cable car.
- Full Restaurants: It will be harder to find a table, especially in the Old Town (Zona Velha).
- Traffic Restrictions: Traffic along the waterfront may be slightly slower due to the setup work.
Our Recommendation:
If possible, plan your visit to the cable car or the gardens in Monte for another day. If not, head out as early as possible in the morning. On the other hand, a stroll along the decorated Avenida Arriaga is very pleasant.
Tip of the Day: Experience an Authentic Festival in Santana
If you want to see something truly local, head to the town of Santana on the north side of the island today. The traditional Festa dos Compadres is culminating here, symbolically opening the Carnival season in Madeira. Expect satirical floats, music, and folklore.
Who Is This For?
Travelers with a car who want to experience Madeiran traditions outside the main tourist hubs.
What to Expect:
The center of Santana will be crowded, and finding a parking spot will be nearly impossible. However, the event is a fantastic opportunity to see the island from a different perspective.
Our Recommendation:
Arrive in Santana early in the morning or use the park-and-ride lots on the outskirts of town. It’s a unique experience that’s well worth the slight inconvenience.
Mountain Weather & Trail Conditions: A Word of Caution
Today’s weather is typical for February. The south coast is pleasant with temperatures around 19°C (66°F) and partly cloudy skies. The mountains and the north have more cloud cover, and light showers are possible. The Civil Protection authority warns that trails and stone paths along the levadas are very slippery due to moisture from previous days.
Trail Status Overview:
- Open, but Slippery: Most popular routes like PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes or PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde are accessible. However, be extremely cautious, especially in tunnels and on shaded sections.
- Questionable: The ridge trail PR1 Vereda do Areeiro (between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo) is often closed in the mornings in February due to ice or strong winds.
Our Safety Advice:
- Proper Footwear is Essential: Only attempt trails with sturdy hiking boots that have non-slip soles.
- Check Before You Go: Before heading to Pico do Areeiro, always check the current trail status on the official IFCN website and look at the webcams.
- Consider Alternatives: If conditions on the ridge are uncertain, opt for one of the beautiful levadas at lower altitudes instead, such as the Levada do Moinho in Ponta do Sol.
