Weather and Mountain Safety: Give the Ridges a Rest Today

Today in Madeira is primarily defined by strong winds. Meteorologists are warning of gusts up to 75 km/h, which will mainly affect the northern slopes and the island’s highest mountain areas.

What This Means in Practice:

  • For mountain hikers: Today is the day to postpone any plans for ridge hikes. The iconic PR1 trail between Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo is particularly unsuitable and dangerous. Strong crosswinds pose a serious risk of falling.
  • For all tourists: The situation is calmer by the sea and at lower elevations, where the weather is much more pleasant.

Our Recommendation:

Opt for safer alternatives. Sheltered levadas on the south of the island, a coastal walk, or a visit to the botanical gardens or the center of Funchal are ideal choices.

Hiking Trail (PR) Status and Important Notice

The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has updated the status of popular hiking trails. Some remain closed after the winter due to landslides.

Overview of Key Trails:

  • OPEN: PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes and PR6.1 Levada do Risco, PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde.
  • CLOSED: PR10 Levada do Furado, PR1.3 Vereda da Encumeada, PR7 Levada do Moinho.

Don’t Forget the Tourist Fee!

A mandatory tourist fee of €4.50 per person has been introduced on most popular trails. Make sure you have cash or a payment card ready.

Funchal is Buzzing with Gastronomy, Quiet Elsewhere

Besides the weather, two other events are shaping the day on the island. One is delightful, the other more informational.

Michelin Gala in Funchal

Who this affects: Anyone planning dinner in downtown Funchal.
What’s happening: The capital is hosting the prestigious Michelin Star revelation for Portugal. The city center will have a festive atmosphere, but it will also be crowded. Expect top restaurants to be fully booked and traffic to be heavier around the event venue.
Recommendation: If you want to dine in the city center, book your table as soon as possible.

Minor Night-Time Tremors with No Impact

Who this affects: All tourists on Madeira and Porto Santo.
What happened: Two minor, harmless tremors were recorded during the night. They had no impact on safety, buildings, or infrastructure. All transportation, including ferries to Porto Santo and flights, is operating normally as scheduled.
Recommendation: There is no need for concern; you can continue your holiday without worry.
