Trail Status & Recommendations (April 24, 2026)

Great news for all hiking enthusiasts – the official report from the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) confirms that the vast majority of recommended routes (PR) are open and in excellent condition. Stable weather is creating ideal conditions for any type of outing.

  • Who this affects: All hikers and trekkers.
  • What this means in practice: It is safe to set out on most well-known routes. Conditions today are exceptionally favorable.
  • Our Recommendations:
    • Mountain Crossings (PR1 Pico do Arieiro – Pico Ruivo): Set out as early as possible in the morning. This will give you the best views before clouds roll into the valleys in the afternoon. Don’t forget sun protection.
    • Northern Levadas (PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde): Expect dampness and slippery terrain in some areas. Sturdy, waterproof footwear with good grip is essential.
    • Safety Warning: Strictly stick to marked and open trails. Do not enter paths marked as closed – the risk of landslides is still very real.

Culture and Experiences Today: Combine the North and South

Today is a great day for a road trip. The island offers two fantastic draws – one in the blooming northeast, the other on the sunny south coast.

1. Flower Festivities in São Roque do Faial

The São Roque do Faial area (near Santana) is in full bloom, hosting the popular “Pereiros em Flor” concerts. The entire region is bursting with color and offers breathtaking scenery.

  • Who it’s for: Photographers, nature lovers, and families with children.
  • What this means in practice: It’s an ideal destination for a morning or afternoon trip, combined with a visit to Santana or the Ribeiro Frio viewpoint.
  • Our Recommendation: Make a stop here, take a walk, enjoy the views, and support the local vendors. The spring atmosphere is truly unique.

2. Culture Week in Ribeira Brava

Right in the center of Ribeira Brava, the nine-day “Semana da Cultura” festival begins today. Over fifty events await you in Nova Praça square – from book fairs to concerts and dance performances.

  • Who it’s for: Anyone looking for an authentic evening program outside of Funchal.
  • What this means in practice: Entry to all events is free. You can wander freely, listen to music, and soak up the local atmosphere.
  • Our Recommendation: Combine your visit with dinner at one of the local restaurants. It’s the perfect way to end a day of exploration.

Important Info: Direct Flights from Madeira to the Azores Postponed

Planning a combined holiday in Madeira and the Azores? Please take note. The airline SATA (Azores Airlines) has announced a delay in the launch of its new direct route between Madeira (FNC) and the island of Terceira (TER).

  • Who this affects: Travelers who have purchased a ticket for a direct flight FNC – TER with a departure date between May 7 and early June 2026.
  • What this means in practice: The originally scheduled direct flight will not operate during this period. The route launch has been postponed to June.
  • Our Recommendation: If this affects you, contact the airline or your ticket agent immediately. You will most likely be offered a flight with a layover in Ponta Delgada (PDL), which will increase your travel time.
