Trail and Levada Status: The Mountains Are Reopening, but with Extreme Caution

Good news for all hiking enthusiasts – the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has reopened most hiking trails after Storm ‘Regina’. The weather has stabilized, but extra caution is necessary after the heavy rains. Some of the most popular routes remain partially or fully closed.

Key Restrictions You Must Know:

  • PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro ↔ Pico Ruivo): ONLY a short section from the Pico do Areeiro car park to the Ninho da Manta / Pedra Rija viewpoint (approx. 1.2 km) is open. The rest of the trail leading to Pico Ruivo is still closed. Do not attempt to proceed further.
  • FULLY CLOSED TRAILS: For safety reasons (risk of landslides and falling rocks), do not attempt the following trails:
    • PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada
    • PR 7 Levada do Moinho
    • PR 10 Levada do Furado (Ribeiro Frio)
    • PR 16 Levada Fajã do Rodrigues
    • PR 20 Vereda do Jardim do Mar

Who is affected? All hikers and trekkers.
What does this mean in practice? You must plan your trip carefully today and avoid all closed sections.
Our recommendation: Always check the latest status on official channels, such as the IFCN WalkMe app, before every hike. Today, focus on open and safe trails, such as those in the Rabaçal area or on the São Lourenço peninsula (PR 8).

Transportation: Airport is Back to Normal, but Be Cautious on the Highway

The traffic situation is mixed today. While operations at the airport are returning to normal, you should expect delays on the roads.

Cristiano Ronaldo Airport

After two days of strong winds causing dozens of flight cancellations, airport operations have been fully restored. Most flights are now arriving and departing on schedule. Airlines are currently processing passengers affected by the previous cancellations.

Via Rápida and Driving

Several incidents have been reported on the main Via Rápida (VR1) highway today, complicating traffic flow. A motorcycle accident in the Santa Rita area (towards Funchal) and a multi-car collision near Caniço de Baixo are causing significant traffic jams.

Who is affected? Drivers and passengers heading to the airport or on excursions.
What does this mean in practice? You may experience significant delays, especially around Funchal and when traveling east from the city (towards the airport, Machico).
Our recommendation: If you are driving to the airport today, leave with plenty of extra time. Monitor live traffic updates on your navigation app.

Funchal is Bustling Today, Expect Crowds

Two large cruise ships are docked overnight in Funchal’s port, bringing thousands of additional visitors to the city. The city center, the promenade, and the area around the Mercado dos Lavradores market are significantly busier than usual.

Who is affected? Anyone planning to visit the center of Funchal.
What does this mean in practice? Expect fuller restaurants, cafes, and more people on the streets.
Our recommendation: If you prefer tranquility, consider visiting the city center on another day. Today is a perfect opportunity to explore the botanical gardens above the city (e.g., Monte Palace Tropical Garden) or head to the quieter north coast.
