Funchal: Flower Festival and a Logistical Challenge

The capital city is alive today with one of the highlights of the year – the Flower Festival (Festa da Flor). The streets are filled with people, music, and beautiful decorations. However, this also presents several challenges you should be aware of.

What’s Happening in the City?

  • Flower Carpets: On the main avenue, Avenida Arriaga, you can admire artists creating stunning floral patterns directly on the pavement.
  • Crowds: In addition to festival-goers, around 8,000 passengers from three large cruise ships are also in the city center. Expect popular spots like the Mercado dos Lavradores market or the Monte cable car to be extremely crowded with long queues.
  • Traffic Restrictions: The main coastal road, Avenida do Mar, is completely closed to cars. Many bus routes have had their stops relocated to the outskirts of the city center.

Practical Recommendations:

For Festival Lovers: Head into Funchal’s city center on foot or by bus. Enjoy the unique atmosphere, but be patient. It’s a fantastic opportunity to experience Madeira in all its glory.

For Those Seeking Tranquility: Today is the perfect day to skip Funchal altogether. Plan a trip to the opposite end of the island. Visit the volcanic pools in Porto Moniz, walk along the Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula, or discover quiet villages in the southwest like Jardim do Mar.

Mountains and Hiking: Wind Commands Caution

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued a yellow weather warning for strong winds in Madeira’s mountainous regions, with gusts potentially reaching up to 80 km/h. This has a significant impact on planning any mountain hikes.

Status of Hiking Trails (PR)

  • PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro ↔ Pico Ruivo): While the trail is officially open, it is extremely dangerous today due to the strong winds. There is a high risk of losing your balance on the narrow ridges. Unless you are a highly experienced and well-equipped hiker, we strongly advise against attempting this trek today.
  • Closed Trails: For maintenance reasons, the PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada trail and a large section of PR 2 Vereda do Urzal remain closed. Please respect the signage.
  • Levadas in the Forest: Trails such as PR 9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde are a safer choice today. However, remember to pack a flashlight for the tunnels and sturdy, waterproof footwear.

Practical Recommendations:

For hiking today, choose routes at lower altitudes and in sheltered valleys. The levadas on the south coast are ideal, as they are protected from the wind and offer beautiful views without unnecessary risk.

Airport and Island Transport

Getting to the Airport: Cristiano Ronaldo Airport is operating normally, and the wind has not yet affected flights. If you are flying out today, leave with plenty of extra time (ideally 1-2 hours earlier than usual). Traffic closures in Funchal may cause significant delays on approach roads.

Travelling by Car: Avoid driving into Funchal’s city center today. Unless you are heading to a hotel with reserved parking, you will save yourself a lot of time and frustration.
