Today’s Top Alert: Key Trails Are Closed
If you’re planning a hike today, be extremely cautious. The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has reported the closure of several of the most popular trails due to maintenance and recent landslides. Please respect the on-site signage.
Status of Popular Trails (PR)
- PR1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro → Pico Ruivo): ⚠️ PARTIALLY OPEN. Access is only possible from the Pico do Areeiro car park to the Pedra Rija viewpoint (approx. 1.2 km). The actual traverse to Pico Ruivo is CLOSED. Do not attempt to proceed further.
- PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde: ⛔ CLOSED. The entire trail is inaccessible. You must choose a different hike.
- PR10 Levada do Furado: ⛔ CLOSED. This is due to a landslide between Ribeiro Frio and Lamaceiros.
- PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes: ✅ OPEN. The trail is accessible, but expect a large number of tourists as usual.
What This Means for You
For all hikers: Before you set out, check the current trail status on the official IFCN website. Respect the closure notices – it’s not just about fines, but above all, your safety.
New Fee System: Please be reminded that since the beginning of the year, non-residents are required to pay an entrance fee for some protected areas. Payment must be made online through the Simplifica portal.
Weather and Tips for Your Day
Madeira can expect a cloudy day today with a chance of light rain, especially in the afternoon. In the mountains, anticipate reduced visibility and fog. Temperatures are mild and there are no strong winds, so airport operations and ferry services to Porto Santo should be unaffected.
So, Where Should You Go?
- Urban Exploration: The weather is perfect for visiting Funchal. Stroll through the famous Mercado dos Lavradores, take a ride on the wicker toboggan sleds from Monte, or visit one of the local museums (e.g., the CR7 Museum or the Whale Museum in Caniçal).
- Alternative Walks: If the Levada do Caldeirão Verde was your dream hike, consider the Levada do Rei in São Jorge as an alternative. Given the fog, a visit to the Fanal forest could also be magical, but be prepared for damp and chilly conditions.
- Gastronomy: A “gray day” is the perfect opportunity to discover Madeiran cuisine. Stop for an espetada or fresh seafood at one of the restaurants in Câmara de Lobos.
Safety in Funchal
Although Madeira is generally very safe, be cautious when returning from bars and clubs in the early morning hours. Stick to the main, well-lit streets and avoid deserted alleys in the center of Funchal.
