Funchal Today: Crowds in the Center and Local Traffic Disruptions
The large cruise ship Ocean Allura, with over a thousand passengers, arrived in Funchal’s port today. Additionally, a motorcycle accident on Rua Velha da Ajuda complicated traffic in the western part of the city (Ajuda area) this afternoon.

Additionally, the police released weekly statistics reporting 62 traffic accidents on the island. The most high-risk areas are traditionally around Funchal, Santa Cruz, and Machico.

Trail Status: PR1 Open with Restrictions, Fees Apply
The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has updated the status of the most popular hiking trails. Online registration and a €3 fee for non-residents to access PR trails are still mandatory.
- PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro (Areeiro – Ruivo): The trail is OPEN. Passage is only possible via the western route through the tunnels. The eastern ridge trail via Pico das Torres remains closed long-term.
- PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada: The trail is PARTIALLY OPEN. Only the section between Pico Ruivo and the Boca das Torrinhas junction is accessible. The continuation to the Encumeada pass is still closed.
- PR 10 Levada do Furado (Ribeiro Frio – Portela): This levada is fully OPEN after renovations.

Before every hike on a marked PR trail, you must register and pay online through the Simplifica portal. The trek between the highest peaks is currently possible, but you cannot continue all the way to Encumeada. Plan your routes according to the current restrictions.
