End of August Weather: Morning Clouds, Afternoon Sun
Madeira is bidding farewell to August with typical summer weather. If you are heading to the mountains or the north coast this morning, pack a light jacket or a raincoat. Increased cloud cover and occasional light showers are expected, which may reduce visibility on the trails.
In the afternoon, however, you can look forward to the complete opposite. The sky will clear up completely, especially on the southern slopes. With temperatures climbing to 28°C and a pleasant sea temperature of 24–25°C, it’s the perfect time to relax on the beach. The eastern and western tips of the island may experience stronger winds with gusts up to 40 km/h.
Safety in Nature: Extreme Fire Risk Still in Effect
The weekend forest fire in the Estreito de Câmara de Lobos area (Furneira locality) is now under control, but the situation serves as a stark warning. Firefighters are still monitoring the burnt area, and an investigation is underway.
What Does This Mean for Tourists?
- Avoid the Area: Stay completely clear of the forest roads and the vicinity of the villages of Furneiras and Garachico, where fire department vehicles are still operating.
- Ban on Fire and Smoking: A smaller fire near Moinho da Serra, caused by a discarded cigarette butt, shows how dry the vegetation is. There is a strict ban on making fires and discarding cigarette butts in nature, on levadas, and at viewpoints. Even a small spark can cause a catastrophe.
Trail and Levada Status: PR 1 and PR 10 Are Open, But Require Registration
Good news for all hiking enthusiasts. According to official information from the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN), the key routes are fully accessible:
- PR 1 – Vereda do Areeiro: The route between Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo is open without restrictions.
- PR 10 – Levada do Furado: The route from Ribeiro Frio to Portela is also open.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Remember that prior online registration via the SIMplifica portal is required for all official trails (PR). Capacity is limited and divided into time slots (entry every 30 minutes). Plan and book your trip well in advance.

Traffic Restrictions in Santa Cruz
If you are driving to Santa Cruz today, be cautious. A fallen utility pole has caused the closure of a local road (off the main Via Rápida highway). Expect possible delays and follow police instructions for detours.
Funchal Summer Fest in Full Swing
Looking for something to do this evening? The Funchal Summer Fest music festival is taking place in Santa Catarina Park in Funchal. The main program starts at 6:30 PM and promises a great atmosphere with an ocean view. However, during the day, access to the park is limited to ticket holders, and parking in the area is difficult.
A Final Point of Interest: Ecological Expedition in the Harbour
In Funchal’s harbour, you might come across the sailboat of the Swiss Schwoerer family. This unusual crew is travelling the world as part of the “TOPtoTOP” ecological expedition to raise awareness about climate change. It’s a great source of inspiration and a meeting opportunity for anyone interested in sustainable travel.
