Weather and Mountain Safety: Beware of Heat and Challenging Terrain

A yellow warning (aviso amarelo) for high temperatures is in effect today for the south coast and mountain areas, lasting until Tuesday evening. Temperatures in Funchal will reach up to 27°C, but it can feel much hotter in direct sunlight in the mountains. Intense solar radiation can penetrate even through cloud cover.

This warning comes as civil protection statistics show that the first half of 2026 has been the most tragic on record in Madeira’s mountains. Nearly all rescue operations involved foreign tourists who often overestimated their abilities or disregarded trail markings.

  • Who it affects: All tourists, especially those planning hikes in the mountains (e.g., PR1 Pico do Areeiro – Pico Ruivo) and on the south side of the island.
  • What it means in practice: Increased risk of dehydration, sunstroke, and general exhaustion. Mountain conditions can change very rapidly.
  • Our recommendation: Start your hikes early in the morning. Bring plenty of water (at least 2 liters per person), a hat, and high-quality sunscreen. Do not underestimate the difficulty of the terrain and choose routes that match your fitness level.

Trail Status: Restrictions on PR1 and Other Closures

The official forestry service (IFCN) has updated the status of recommended hiking routes. The most critical information concerns the island’s busiest ridge trail.

PR1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro – Pico Ruivo)

While the route is open, significant restrictions are in place:

  • The eastern route (Vereda Leste via Pico das Torres) is COMPLETELY CLOSED. Entry is strictly forbidden.
  • You must use the western route through the tunnels to pass.
  • Due to the extreme number of hikers, a ONE-WAY SYSTEM is in effect on the section from the Pedra Rija viewpoint to the summit of Pico Ruivo.

Other Closed Trails (as of August 2, 2026):

  • PR 7 Levada do Moinho
  • PR 20 Vereda do Jardim do Mar
  • PR 27 Glaciar de Planalto
  • PR 28 Levada da Rocha Vermelha
  • PR 3 Levada do Pico do Castelo (Porto Santo)

Remember: Always check the current trail status on the official IFCN website before any hike. Non-residents are required to register and pay a fee to access the PR trails.

Where to Go Today: Machico Festival and a Secret Viewpoint Tip

Gastronomic Festival in Machico

If you’re looking for something to do this late afternoon and evening, head to the bay in Machico. The 39th edition of the traditional and very popular Semana Gastronómica (Gastronomic Week) is underway. You’ll find dozens of stalls with local specialties, fresh seafood, poncha, and Madeira wine. The program also includes live cooking shows and folklore performances.

  • Who it’s for: Lovers of food, culture, and authentic atmosphere.
  • Our recommendation: The ideal time to visit is after 6 PM. Be aware that parking in the area can be challenging, so plan to arrive with time to spare.

Miradouro das Cruzinhas Viewpoint

If you’re looking for a crowd-free spot with wild views, try discovering the semi-forgotten Miradouro das Cruzinhas viewpoint in the Faial (Santana) area. The site is neglected and the access path from the ER103 road is overgrown, but it offers unique scenery. We recommend sturdy footwear, long trousers, and extra caution.

Practical Information: Transport and Healthcare

Transport After the Rali Vinho da Madeira

The main roads that were closed over the weekend for the car rally are now fully open. However, especially in mountain sections (in the areas of Santana, Ribeiro Frio, Santo da Serra), you may encounter cleaning crews and equipment today removing temporary markings and litter. Please drive with extra caution.

Funchal Hospital Renovations

Starting tomorrow, Monday, August 3rd, the main hospital in Funchal, Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital, will begin extensive renovations of its emergency department, expected to last approximately 10 months. If you require treatment, be prepared for potential service limitations and longer waiting times. For less serious cases, consider visiting local health centers (Centro de Saúde) in other towns.
