Mountain Trails and Levadas: What’s Open and What to Watch Out For

Summer weather is tempting people into the mountains, but maintenance and safety work have led to several important changes. Before you set out, check the current status of your planned route.

PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro – Closed Today!

Who does this affect? All hikers who planned to trek between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo.
What this means in practice: Madeira’s most famous high-altitude trail is completely closed today, Tuesday, June 23rd, to finalize remedial works. Until Friday, the trail will only be accessible on weekends (Friday–Sunday).
Our recommendation: Cancel your trip on PR 1 for today. The good news is that from Friday, June 26th, the trail will be fully open again throughout the week. Remember that you must have a reservation and pay the fee (4.5 EUR for non-residents) through the SIMplifica portal to access the trail.

PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada – Partially Accessible

Who does this affect? More experienced hikers looking for longer mountain traverses.
What this means in practice: A 3.9 km section between Pico Ruivo and the Boca das Torrinhas pass is now open. From there, you can continue along the PR 2 trail to Curral das Freiras (Valley of the Nuns) or to Boaventura.
Our recommendation: Take advantage of this new option, but remember that the rest of the PR 1.3 trail from Boca das Torrinhas pass to Encumeada remains closed. Therefore, plan your return via a different route.

Other Permanently Closed Trails

For your safety, the following trails remain completely closed until further notice:

  • PR 7 – Levada do Moinho
  • PR 10 – Levada do Furado
  • PR 20 – Vereda do Jardim do Mar
  • PR 27 – Glaciar de Planalto
  • PR 28 – Levada da Rocha Vermelha
  • PR 3 – Levada do Pico do Castelo (on Porto Santo island)

Who is this for? Anyone in or around Funchal who loves local products and live music.
What this means in practice: Today at 4:00 PM, the popular Madeiran apple cider festival kicks off on the main promenade, Avenida Arriaga. Until June 28th, you can taste cider with a protected geographical indication, listen to folklore music, and watch cooking shows.
Our recommendation: An ideal destination for an evening stroll. Admission is free, and it’s a great opportunity to buy unique gifts directly from the producers.

Saint John’s Night on Porto Santo

Who is this for? Visitors to the island of Porto Santo.
What this means in practice: At 9:00 PM, traditional parades will begin in Praça do Barqueiro square, followed by a spectacular fireworks display over the old pier (Cais Velho) at 10:30 PM.
Our recommendation: If you’re on the “golden island,” don’t miss this spectacle. Expect movement restrictions around the pier and arrive early.
