Trail and Levada Status: PR10 Levada do Furado is Closed
The most important news for all hikers: the popular PR10 – Levada do Furado route (the section between Ribeiro Frio and Lamaceiros) is temporarily fully closed for safety reasons. The closure is due to a massive landslide that has damaged a portion of the trail.
- Who is affected? All hikers who were planning a tour in the Ribeiro Frio area.
- What does this mean in practice? Do not enter the closed section; it is dangerous. Please choose an alternative route.
- What we recommend: Before any hike, check the current status of the trails on the official IFCN website (Instituto das Florestas e da Conservação da Natureza). Also, remember that non-residents must make an online booking and pay a fee via the SIMplifica portal to access all officially marked trails (PR).
Weather: Mountains in the Clouds, Better Conditions in the South
Today’s forecast for Madeira predicts mostly cloudy skies with a chance of light showers, especially on the north coast and at higher altitudes. If you are planning to ascend Pico do Areeiro or hike in the mountains, be prepared for fog, humidity, and low visibility. Pack a waterproof jacket.
In contrast, the south coast and Funchal promise more pleasant weather with temperatures between 21 and 27°C. The sea temperature is a wonderful 24–25°C, which is ideal for swimming. The wind is only light.

- What does this mean in practice? The highlight of the celebrations will be a concert at 22:30 (10:30 PM) by the famous Portuguese fado singer Raquel Tavares. However, expect crowded streets, limited parking, and local traffic restrictions in the centre of São Vicente.

Delays near Poiso on the Road to Pico do Areeiro
This morning, a serious accident occurred on the mountain road Caminho do Poiso, a key route connecting Funchal with popular destinations like Pico do Areeiro and Ribeiro Frio. Although the main emergency response should be concluding, please exercise increased caution in this area and expect possible minor delays due to the movement of emergency vehicles.
Changes to Bolt and Uber Apps
From September 1st, a new law will take effect in Madeira regulating ride-hailing services like Bolt and Uber. The main change for tourists is that traditional taxi drivers will now be able to join the apps. This should lead to better vehicle availability across the island. Additionally, TVDE vehicles (Bolt, Uber) will be newly and more visibly marked.
