General Situation in Madeira

According to morning reports from local media, it is a calm day on the island. No major incidents, traffic disruptions, or weather fluctuations have been reported that would significantly impact travel. This means ideal conditions for tourists to explore the beauty of Madeira without unexpected restrictions.

Current Trail Status and Important Notices

However, the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has updated the status of some hiking trails. If you are planning a hike today, pay close attention to the following restrictions and requirements to avoid any issues.

Closed Trails: PR 9 and PR 18

For safety reasons, sections of two very popular trails remain closed. We strongly advise avoiding these areas.

  • PR 9 – Levada do Caldeirão Verde: The connecting section between Caldeirão Verde and Caldeirão do Inferno is closed. The levada walk to Caldeirão Verde itself is accessible, but continuing further is prohibited.
  • PR 18 – Levada do Rei: This entire trail is completely closed to the public.

Who is affected? All tourists and trekking enthusiasts who planned to visit these specific levadas.

What does this mean in practice? Entering the mentioned sections is dangerous and officially forbidden. Respect the signage, and do not risk injury or a potential fine.

What do we recommend? Choose a different, fully open, and safe trail for your hike today. Excellent alternatives include the Vereda do Fanal (PR13) or the spectacular mountain hike from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo (PR1). However, always check the current conditions and weather in the specific location before you set out.

Mandatory Registration and Trail Access Fee

We remind you that for non-residents, online registration and payment of a fee are mandatory for accessing recommended walking routes (PR) in Madeira.

Who is affected? All non-residents over the age of 12.

What does this mean in practice? Before starting your hike, you must register through the SIMplifica portal and pay a fee of €3 per person.

What do we recommend? Complete your registration online in advance. This will help you avoid unnecessary delays and potential complications on-site.
