What’s New in Madeira as of June 1, 2026?
Summer in Madeira officially begins today, bringing several key changes that will affect many tourists’ plans. As of today, expect a new fee at car rental agencies, plan your registration for the iconic mountain hike, and take advantage of freshly reopened trails. Here’s everything you need to know.
New Car Rental Fee: €2 Per Day
Who is affected? Anyone renting a car in Madeira from June 1, 2026, onwards.
What does this mean in practice? A new regional tax (Taxa de Utilização) has come into effect. When you pick up your vehicle, the rental company will charge you €2 for each day of the rental period (€1 for electric vehicles). The fee is capped at 10 days, so you will pay a maximum of €20 per rental. The funds will be used in part to maintain tourist trails and levadas.
Our recommendation: Factor in this additional cost and have cash or a credit/debit card ready when collecting your car at the airport.
Mountain Hiking: Big News for PR1 and the Reopening of PR9
PR1 Pico do Areeiro – Pico Ruivo: Closed Today, but Key Registrations Are Opening!
Who is affected? Anyone planning to do Madeira’s most famous mountain hike.
What does this mean in practice? Until June 25, the PR1 trail is only open on weekends (Friday–Sunday). Therefore, it is closed today, Monday, June 1. The crucial news, however, is that it will open for daily access starting June 26. Today, the government’s Simplifica portal is launching registrations for the new daily slots for late June and the entire summer.
Our recommendation: If you plan to do this trek in late June or later, register for your time slot on the Simplifica portal as soon as possible. Spots will fill up quickly. Remember, the trail remains one-way from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo.
A Great Alternative: PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde Is Fully Open
Who is this for? Hikers looking for a breathtaking walk through the laurel forest.
What does this mean in practice? The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has confirmed that one of the most beautiful levada walks, PR9 – Levada do Caldeirão Verde, is once again completely safe and open after maintenance. It is an ideal alternative to the PR1, which is closed today.
Our recommendation: Head out on PR9 and enjoy the incredible atmosphere of the Laurisilva forest. Don’t forget to register in advance and pay the €3 fee for non-residents on the Simplifica platform.
Current Status of Other Recommended Trails (PR)
- Fully closed: PR 1.3 (Encumeada), PR 3 (Porto Santo), PR 7 (Moinho), PR 10 (Furado), PR 20 (Jardim do Mar), PR 27 (Glaciar de Planalto), PR 28 (Rocha Vermelha).
- Partially passable: PR 4 (Barreiro), PR 12 (Caminho real da Encumeada).
Weather, Safety, and Other Tips
Warning: Temperature Differences – From 23°C by the Sea to 10°C in the Mountains
While the overnight temperature on the coast in Santa Cruz did not drop below 20°C, the summit of Pico do Areeiro measured just 10.1°C this morning. When planning morning trips to the mountains, do not underestimate the need for proper clothing. A difference of more than 13°C requires a quality windbreaker and multiple layers.
Bathing Season Begins: Beaches Now Supervised by Lifeguards
As of today, 42 professional lifeguards are stationed at 13 main beaches, making your ocean swimming significantly safer. However, always respect the flag warnings.
For Foodies: The Beloved *lapas* Are Back
Good news for seafood lovers. After a long pause, the permitted harvesting of limpets (*lapas*) resumes today. You can once again enjoy this Madeiran delicacy, served fresh on a hot pan with garlic and butter, in local restaurants.
