Top Story of the Day: PR1 Vereda do Areeiro to Reopen Permanently from June 26

We have excellent news for all high-altitude hiking enthusiasts. Madeira’s most famous trail, the PR1 connecting Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo, will be fully open every day starting June 26, 2026. This ends the current restrictions where the path was only accessible on weekends due to maintenance following landslides.

What This Means in Practice

  • Until June 25: The transitional schedule remains in effect. The trail is open only from Friday to Sunday. It is completely closed from Monday to Thursday.
  • From June 26: The trail will be open daily. Please note, the section from the Pedra Rija viewpoint to Pico Ruivo remains one-way. For your return journey, you must choose an alternative route, such as the PR1.2 to Achada do Teixeira.
  • Reservations and Fee: Mandatory registration via the Simplifica platform and the €10.50 fee for non-residents remain in effect. Bookings for dates from June 26 will open tomorrow, June 1.
  • Planned Closures in September: Expect short-term complete closures on September 14–17 and September 21–22 for the installation of a new footbridge.

What We Recommend

If you plan to hike the trail after June 26, book your spot as soon as the reservation system opens tomorrow. Don’t forget to plan the logistics for your return trip from the end of the trail (e.g., from Achada do Teixeira).

Weather and Safety: High Wind Warning for the Mountains

Today promises mostly sunny weather with pleasant temperatures up to 25°C in Funchal. However, pay close attention to the wind, which could gust up to 40 km/h in the mountains and on the eastern or western tips of the island (e.g., Ponta de São Lourenço).

Who Is Affected?

All hikers heading to higher altitudes (Pico do Areeiro, Paul da Serra) or to exposed coastal paths and viewpoints.

What We Recommend

  • Clothing: Pack a quality windproof jacket.
  • Safety: Be extremely cautious on narrow paths and mountain ridges. Sturdy footwear is an absolute must.
  • Swimming: The south coast is calm with waves up to 1 meter. Be cautious on the north coast, where waves can reach up to 2 meters.

Culture and Events: Last Chance for the Flower Festival

Today, Sunday, is the last day to fully experience the atmosphere of Madeira’s famous Flower Festival (Festa da Flor). Starting tomorrow, the floral installations will be gradually removed.

Afternoon Tip: The Finale in Santa Cruz

Don’t miss the closing events in the town of Santa Cruz, which begin at 4:00 PM with a theatrical performance, continue with a classic car parade, and culminate in evening concerts. It’s the perfect opportunity to take your last photos of the island in bloom.

Evening Tip: Fado by the Ocean

If you’re looking for an authentic experience, the Calheta Beach hotel on the southwest coast is hosting an evening of traditional Portuguese Fado music tonight, paired with regional cuisine. We recommend booking your spot in advance.
