Weather and Safety: Raincoats and Caution Advised Today
Today’s weather in Madeira is unstable. Official warnings are in effect on two fronts – at sea and in the mountains. This is an ideal opportunity to discover the charm of Madeira’s towns, museums, or caves.
Rain and High Wave Warning
Who is affected? All tourists, especially those planning mountain hikes or coastal walks.
What does this mean in practice?
- Mountains and South Coast: A yellow warning for heavy rainfall is in effect. Paths and levadas may be very slippery, with reduced visibility and a risk of falling rocks in the mountains.
- Coastline: The Funchal Port Authority has extended the high wave warning until 6:00 PM today. Swimming on unprotected beaches and walking near breakwaters is dangerous.
Our Recommendation: Before any trip, check the live webcams (NetMadeira) and the forecast on a weather app (Madeira Weather). The weather here changes very quickly and locally. While it may be raining heavily in the mountains, it could just be drizzling in Funchal.
Hiking Trail Status (PR): Key Closures and New Rules
Who is affected? All hiking enthusiasts.
What does this mean in practice? Some of the most popular trails are currently inaccessible due to maintenance, landslides, or adverse conditions.
- PR1 Vereda do Areeiro (ridge walk): ONLY the short section from Pico do Areeiro to the Pedra Rija viewpoint is open. The full traverse to Pico Ruivo is CLOSED. Combined with the weather, this hike is extremely dangerous today.
- PR10 Levada do Furado: The route from Ribeiro Frio to Portela is completely CLOSED.
- PR1.3 Vereda da Encumeada: Also CLOSED.
Our Recommendation: Always check the current status on the official IFCN website (ifcn.madeira.gov.pt) before every hike. Also, be aware of the new regulation effective from 2026: online registration and payment via the SIMplifica portal will be required to access recommended trails (PR). Failure to comply may result in a fine.
Traffic and City Activity
Who is affected? Drivers and tourists in Funchal and the eastern part of the island.
What does this mean in practice?
- Traffic Disruption near Camacha: An accident has been reported on the VE5 expressway near Cancela. Expect delays if you are heading in this direction.
- Busy Funchal: Several cruise ships are docked in the port today. The city center, especially around the Mercado dos Lavradores, will be significantly busier than usual.
- Construction Work: A new hotel is under construction in the historic part of Funchal (Carmo area). Please exercise extra caution when walking through this neighborhood.
Our Recommendation: If you’re looking for a quieter experience, plan your visit to Funchal’s center for the late afternoon or evening, after the cruise passengers have returned to their ships.
Today’s Tip: What to Do When It Rains?
Bad weather in the mountains is a great excuse to explore Madeira’s other treasures. Instead of getting your boots wet, you can enjoy:
- São Vicente Caves: A fascinating tour of the island’s volcanic underground on the north coast.
- Museums in Funchal: Visit the CR7 Museum, the interactive Madeira Story Centre, or Blandy’s Wine Lodge for a taste of Madeira wine.
- Mercado dos Lavradores (Farmers’ Market): Despite the crowds, the vibrant display of fruits, vegetables, and fish is well worth seeing.
