Weather and Safety: High Sun and Strong Winds

Madeira is experiencing a typical summer day today, but it comes with two important warnings. The south of the island, including Funchal, will be clear to partly cloudy, while the north may see some cloud cover with light drizzle in the morning.

  • Extreme UV Radiation: The UV index is reaching a very high level of 9 out of 10. Whether you’re heading to the beach or the mountains, don’t forget high-SPF sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
  • Strong Winds: Northeasterly winds are expected to intensify this afternoon, with gusts reaching up to 60 km/h in the mountains and on the eastern (Ponta de São Lourenço) and western tips of the island. Be cautious when planning ridge hikes, as strong winds can affect your stability.

The Importance of Proper Footwear and Caution

Yesterday’s incident on the PR8 – Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço trail, where a French tourist injured her leg and had to be rescued, highlights how treacherous Madeira’s terrain can be. We remind you that sturdy hiking boots are essential for the rocky and dusty paths. Leave sneakers and sandals for city walks.

Hiking Trail Status: Crucial Information for PR1!

For all mountain lovers, we have a vital update concerning Madeira’s most famous trail.

  • PR1 – Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Arieiro ↔ Pico Ruivo): ATTENTION! Today, Sunday, June 7th, is the last day this week that the trail is open. Due to maintenance work, it will be completely closed from tomorrow (Monday, June 8th) until Thursday (June 11th). If you plan to do this hike, go today or wait until Friday. The trail is scheduled to fully reopen without restrictions from June 26th.
  • PR9 – Levada do Caldeirão Verde: Following maintenance, this trail is fully passable and open without any restrictions.

Transport and Airport

If you are traveling by car or flying out of Madeira today, please note the following information.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo Airport (FNC): Due to forecasted strong crosswinds, we recommend monitoring the live departure and arrival boards. The wind in Madeira can sometimes complicate air traffic.
  • VR1 Motorway: This morning’s car accident near the airport exit (in the direction from Funchal) has been cleared, and the motorway is fully open. However, please drive with extra caution in that section, as minor delays are still possible. To be safe, allow a little extra time for your journey to the airport.

Today’s Program: Festivals and Motorcycles

The weekend is ending, and so are several great events. Looking for something to do today?

  • Medieval Market in Machico: Today is your last chance to visit the magnificent Renaissance festival, “Mercado Quinhentista,” in the historic center of Machico. You’ll find hundreds of costumed performers, music, theater, and period-specific delicacies. Expect large crowds and limited parking.
  • Street Festival in Funchal: A traditional “Arraial Madeirense” is taking place right in the capital on Rua Penha de França from 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM. It’s a great opportunity to taste local espetada and bolo do caco and experience an authentic atmosphere without traveling far.
  • Supermoto Races in Faial: Fans of high-speed action can head to Faial in the northeast of the island, where the Supermoto Grand Prix is being held at the local karting track. The main races start after 3:00 PM, and admission is free.
