Mountain Hiking: Important Changes and Restrictions on the PR1 Pico do Areeiro Trail

Madeira’s most famous trek between the peaks of Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo (PR1) is undergoing significant changes that will directly affect you today.

  • Who is affected? All hikers planning to cross the ridge between the island’s third-highest and highest peaks.
  • What this means in practice: Due to maintenance, today (Thursday, May 21st) the trail is only open from the Pico do Areeiro car park to the Pedra Rija viewpoint (approx. 1.2 km). You cannot continue to Pico Ruivo. The full route will reopen for the weekend (Friday–Sunday). Furthermore, once the trail fully reopens, a new rule will be in effect: the section beyond the Pedra Rija viewpoint is now ONE-WAY ONLY, heading towards Pico Ruivo. To return, you must use alternative routes (PR1.2 or PR1.1).
  • What we recommend: If you planned to hike the PR1 today, adjust your plans for a short trip to the Pedra Rija viewpoint and back. Also, remember that a paid online reservation via the SIMplifica portal is now required for this hike.

Traffic: Planning a Trip to the North? Expect Delays

Important road safety work is underway on the north coast today, which will affect traffic flow.

  • Who is affected? Drivers and travelers heading towards the São Vicente and Seixal areas.
  • What this means in practice: On the VE2 expressway between these towns, crews are clearing loose rocks from the cliff faces. For this reason, traffic will be completely stopped for periods of approximately 30 minutes throughout the day.
  • What we recommend: If you are driving in this direction, allow significantly more travel time. Consider using the delay for a coffee break in São Vicente or plan a longer stop at one of the viewpoints.

What Else is Happening on the Island Today?

Great Weather and Smooth Airport Operations

The weather is perfect for tourists today. Forecasters report mostly sunny skies with few clouds and stable conditions with no strong winds. Operations at Cristiano Ronaldo Airport are running smoothly. It’s an ideal day for a levada walk, a visit to the coastal towns, or a boat trip to Porto Santo.

Cultural Celebrations in Funchal

The capital city, Funchal, is celebrating World Day for Cultural Diversity today. If you’re in the city center, you may come across various cultural events – from music and dance performances to outdoor exhibitions. It’s a great opportunity to soak up the local atmosphere.

A Plea to Protect Monk Seals

During your coastal explorations, especially on the eastern peninsula of Ponta de São Lourenço, you might encounter the rare Mediterranean monk seal (known locally as “lobo-marinho”). Local authorities ask that if you see these animals, you maintain a respectful distance, do not disturb them, and do not block their path to the sea. Your consideration helps protect this endangered colony.
