Mountain Trail Status: Be Aware of Major Restrictions

If you’re heading to the mountains today, be alert. Several key hiking trails are closed or have significant restrictions due to maintenance and the aftermath of landslides. Before any trip, check the current status on the official IFCN website.

PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro – Pico Ruivo)

The island’s most popular ridge walk is impassable for a full traverse today. The following restrictions apply:

  • Partial Opening: From Pico do Areeiro, the trail is only accessible for 1.2 km, up to the Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint.
  • One-Way System: A one-way system is in effect on this short section.
  • Eastern Route: The path via Pico das Torres is completely closed.

Who is affected? All high-altitude hikers who planned to traverse between Madeira’s highest peaks.
What does this mean in practice? The full trek cannot be completed. You can only take a short walk to the first viewpoint.
What do we recommend? Choose a different, fully open trail for today. For example, one of the levada walks in the Rabaçal area (PR 6, PR 6.1).

Other Closed Trails

The following popular trails are also currently completely inaccessible:

  • PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada
  • PR 3 Vereda do Burro (Pico do Castelo on Porto Santo island)
  • PR 10 Levada do Furado (in the section between Ribeiro Frio and Lamaceiros)

Don’t Forget the Entrance Fee

We remind you that since the beginning of 2026, it is mandatory for all non-residents to pay an online fee to access selected hiking trails managed by the island government. Payment can be easily made through the Simplifica portal.

Events and Culture: What to Do When You Can’t Go to the Mountains

The unfavorable situation on the trails has a silver lining – it’s an ideal opportunity to discover Madeira’s cultural side. There’s plenty to choose from today!

Aqui Acolá Festival in Ponta do Sol

The picturesque town of Ponta do Sol on the southwest coast has come alive with a music and arts festival. If you’re in the area, don’t miss the great atmosphere in its streets.
Who is this for? All travelers looking for authentic cultural experiences.
What do we recommend? Drive to Ponta do Sol for an afternoon coffee and a walk through the lively town center.

Latin American Music in Funchal

In the evening, the Estádio do Marítimo in Funchal will host a major Venezuelan music festival, “Encontro de Música Llanera” (5:00 PM – 11:00 PM).
Who is this for? Lovers of music, dance, and evening entertainment.
What does this mean in practice? Expect increased traffic and demand for taxis in the western part of Funchal. However, you’ll experience an unforgettable atmosphere at the event.
What do we recommend? Use buses or taxis to get there and enjoy the evening.

New Exhibition in Calheta

If you prefer a quieter activity, visit the MUDAS modern art museum in Calheta, where a new exhibition by artist Paulo Freitas opened at noon today.

Safety in Funchal: Evening Gunfire in the Hotel Zone

Guests staying in the São Martinho hotel district (western Funchal) may hear noise resembling gunfire this evening and tonight.
Who is affected? Tourists staying in the São Martinho area.
What does this mean in practice? There is no danger. The Portuguese army is conducting planned night-time live-fire exercises in the local military zone.
What do we recommend? Remain calm. This is a routine and pre-announced activity.
