Hiking Trails and Levadas: Bookings, One-Way Routes, and Closures
Before you set out on a hike, pay attention to important changes that will affect your plans. The Madeira Nature Park authority (IFCN) has introduced new rules and provides updates on the status of the most popular trails.
Key Information for Hikers:
- Mandatory Online Booking: Remember that entry to the most famous trails (including PR 1 and PR 6) requires advance online registration and payment of the fee (for non-residents) via the SIMplifica portal. You will not be allowed to start the trail without confirmation on your phone.
- One-Way System for Better Comfort: A new one-way system is in effect on the ridge trail from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo (PR 1) and on parts of the Levada das 25 Fontes (PR 6). This significantly reduces congestion in narrow sections and makes for a more pleasant experience.
- Permanent Closures: Due to massive landslides, the PR 10 (Levada do Furado) trail between Ribeiro Frio and Lamaceiros and the PR 5 (Vereda das Funduras) trail remain completely closed until further notice. Do not enter these trails; it is dangerous.
- Good News: Following maintenance, the PR 16 (Levada Fajã do Rodrigues) trail is now open and fully accessible.
Recommendation: Always check the official trail status on the IFCN website (Madeira Trail Status) and ensure your online registration is complete before your hike.
Transport and Safety: Road Closure in Porto da Cruz
If you are driving to the north coast today, be cautious in the Porto da Cruz area. The local road Caminho da Jangalinha is completely closed due to a rockfall.
- Who is affected: Drivers and tourists heading to this specific part of Porto da Cruz.
- What this means: The area is inaccessible. Do not attempt to drive there.
- What we recommend: Obey all signage. Exercise extra caution when driving on secondary roads on the north coast, as slopes can be unstable after rain.
Mountain Weather and Ocean Conditions
Today brings typical spring weather. Expect mostly overcast skies across the island with a chance of light showers. What to prepare for?
- Mountains and Peaks: Planning a hike to Pico Ruivo or Pico do Areeiro? Expect strong wind gusts up to 40 km/h. Don’t forget a quality windbreaker and a waterproof layer.
- Ocean and Swimming: The north coast is rough today, with waves reaching up to 3.5 meters. Swimming is not recommended here. In contrast, the south coast offers calmer conditions with waves up to 2 meters and a pleasant water temperature of around 18–19°C.
Cultural Tip: Experience a True Madeiran “Arraial” in Jardim da Serra
Looking for something authentic? Today marks the high point of the traditional Festa de São Tiago festival in the village of Jardim da Serra, located in the hills above Câmara de Lobos. It’s a great opportunity to experience local culture away from the tourist crowds.
- When and where: Today, Sunday, May 10, in Jardim da Serra.
- Schedule: The main program begins at 4:00 PM with a mass and procession. A folklore group will perform at 6:30 PM, and a live band will play from 10:30 PM.
- What to taste: Be sure to try the traditional espetada (beef skewers), bolo do caco (garlic bread), and soak up the relaxed atmosphere of the local festival.
