Funchal is Buzzing with the Flower Festival

The capital city is experiencing the peak of one of the year’s biggest events today – the allegorical parade of the Festa da Flor. It’s a breathtaking spectacle for visitors, but be prepared for several restrictions.

  • Who is affected? Anyone moving around Funchal and its surroundings today.
  • What does this mean in practice? The city center, especially the Avenida do Mar promenade, is completely closed to vehicle traffic. Hotels are reporting 95% occupancy, and restaurants are under significant pressure.
  • What we recommend: Head to the center on foot or by public transport. If you need to leave Funchal by car, use the upper expressway (Via Rápida). Book your dinner reservations well in advance.

Weather: Warning for the North Coast

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued a yellow warning for high waves on the north coast of Madeira.

  • Who is affected? Tourists planning to swim or take trips on the north side of the island.
  • What does this mean in practice? Waves can reach heights of up to 5 meters. Swimming is extremely dangerous, even in the natural pools at Porto Moniz or on the beach at Seixal. Most boat trips from northern ports have been canceled.
  • What we recommend: For swimming and water activities (like dolphin watching), stick exclusively to the calmer south coast today. On the north coast, be cautious even when walking near the ocean.

Transportation: Issues at the Airport and a Waterfall

The weather is affecting not only the ocean but also air and road transport.

Wind at Cristiano Ronaldo Airport

  • Who is affected? Passengers with scheduled arrivals or departures.
  • What does this mean in practice? Strong winds caused several flights to be diverted this morning. Further delays may occur throughout the day.
  • What we recommend: Regularly check your flight status with your airline. If you are arriving late, inform your accommodation or car rental company.

Closure at Cascata dos Anjos Waterfall

  • Who is affected? Drivers and photographers heading to the west of the island.
  • What does this mean in practice? The old coastal road ER 101 near Ponta do Sol is temporarily closed due to a rockfall. This means the famous waterfall that flows onto the road is inaccessible today.
  • What we recommend: To travel west (e.g., to Calheta), use the main highway with tunnels (VE3) without any issues. Do not ignore entry prohibition signs, as there is a risk of further landslides.

Status of Hiking Trails and Levadas

The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) reports temporary restrictions on some of the most popular trails. Plan your hikes carefully.

  • PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico Areeiro ↔ Pico Ruivo): This trail is partially closed. Only the western route through the tunnels is accessible. The eastern ridge path is unavailable due to maintenance and falling rocks. Expect increased foot traffic on the open section.
  • PR 9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde: This trail is completely closed today for the removal of fallen branches.
  • Today’s recommendation: If you’re heading to the mountains, choose safe and fully open alternatives. Excellent options include the PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes in the Rabaçal area or the easy, scenic PR 11 Vereda dos Balcões trail near Ribeiro Frio. Before any hike, check the latest status on the official IFCN website.
